Beautiful Music

Julie Gibbs
Home: Astoria
Age: 24
Height: 5’ 4"
Weight: 110 lbs
Stats: 32-27-35

Julie knows that hard work and perseverance can pay off – and she’s hoping that the adage holds true in her case.
After finishing up a degree in film composition in Boston last year, Julie was trying to make a go at a career in music, and turned to some modeling to help get her name and her face “out there.”
Getting involved in promotional modeling, she did work for Stirrings Mixers, Axe Body Spray, a local car company’s giveaway and more.
“I was at school in Boston and then I just hung out another a few months,” she said, but “I realized I hated it, so I found this job on Craig’s List and moved back here in March.”
Originally from Long Island, when she landed a job as a receptionist at a music studio, she packed her bags and musical instruments and headed for Astoria.
Work keeps her busy “during weird hours of the day,” so the modeling has been limited to mornings and weekend days.
But Julie’s goal is to be able to make enough of a living to support herself as a musician.
“Like modeling, it is a tough industry to get into – but there is still hope,” she said.
Nestled a good 25 blocks from Astoria Park, Julie enjoys taking the time to walk through her neighborhood to get to the park and to soak in the rich cultures she meets along the way.
When not working or in front of the lens Julie is playing bass and doing random jobs with friends as a musician.
“I want to compose music,” she said. “I want to create it for short films and commercials, I want to play on the tracks, I want to be with other friends who are trying to get into the biz. Right now I have one friend who is trying to get a bunch of us together to try to make a living off it.”

Beauty And The Beast

Queens’ most eligible bachelor, City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr (right), a Borough President hopeful, may have set his sights even higher. He was seen earlier this week cavorting with Presidential niece, model, hottie Lauren Bush. Conservative Democrat Vallone might have to adjust his politics and his diet to accomodate Bush, a vegetarian trying to feed the planet and save the earth. She showed up to endorse Vallone's legislation requiring supermarkets to recycle plastic bags.

Still The King

Peter Benfaremo, "The Ice King"

It’s not the first time the King had to defend his throne.
When the Tribune heard rumor that the Corona Ice King had sold his 63-year-old, iconic business, 52-02 108th St. in the heart of Corona, we went down to talk to him about it.
The Tribune spoke with the King, who refuted any rumor that his business was in trouble. In fact, it was Zagat rated for 2008.
“We’re going to be here for another 63 years,” King Peter Benfaremo said. “I don’t know where these rumors start but it happens ever couple of years.”
The 85-year-old said he is back into the swing of things after a quadruple bypass surgery this summer and only had time to speak for a couple of minutes before going back to making his famed ices and jelly apples.

Five Years, Zero Answers

The slain Jam Master Jay 5 yrs ago

Run-DMC was Queens. Plain and simple.
From the laceless shell-toes, to the fedoras, to the gold rope chains, they ran rap from their Hollis headquarters.
From “Sucker MC’s” to “King of Rock” to “Walk This Way,” they are arguably the most influential group in the long and storied history of hip-hop music and culture.
And Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell was their backbone. He was their maestro. He was their foundation.
He has been dead now for five years. And we still don’t know why.
Jam Master Jay, a 37-year-old married father of three, was executed in a recording studio on Merrick Boulevard on Oct. 30, 2002. Though there seems to be a litany of suspects and motives, there have been no arrests. And Jay’s wife, Terri, still has no answers.
It’s quite difficult to imagine hip-hop without Jam Master Jay. He inspired countless with priceless style, deft cuts and infectious beats. Listen to “Mary, Mary.” Study “Peter Piper.” He made you look at vinyl differently.
Now, vinyl is an endangered species. The younger generations know about the iPhone and iPods. The kids know about downloading and file sharing.
But they probably don’t know too much about Jam Master Jay. They don’t know about the mark he left on music, or the void he left when he passed.
They should, though. Everyone should learn about Jason Mizell, a hero from Queens, New York.

Ho, Ho, Hum

Not that we have a complex about this, but New York City’s marketing company has once again dissed our outstanding borough – this time in its holiday season marketing materials.
NYC & Co. raves about the five boroughs being an excellent tourist destination for the holidays, with the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, “The Nutcracker” at the New York City Ballet, the Rockefeller Center tree and skating rink and more from Manhattan.
Oh, but they didn’t forget the outer boroughs. For the Bronx they highlight the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum’s Annual Winter Family Day. In Brooklyn they rave about the Lights of Dyker Heights. Staten Island gets a big thumbs up for the candlelight tours of historic Richmond Town.
And what do we get in Queens? NYC & Co. tells visitors to our borough to go to the Queens Zoo and watch the animals eat holiday treats – like pumpkins and hay.
Well, doesn’t that just put you in the holiday mood?
Season's Greetings!

Pearlman Pinched

Lou Perlman

Lou Pearlman, the man that brought us those exasperating teeny bopper boys bands of the likes of ‘NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys, is finally getting his just due.
The Flushing native has been indicted on bank fraud charges and is accused of duping banks and investors out of nearly $500 million.
In published reports, an old neighborhood friend said that Pearlman was known for cutting corners and doing a little cheating even as a kid.
That old cliché rings true, you reap what you sow.
I wonder if Justin Timberlake, a former ‘NSYNCer will loan him a few bucks.
