Though she is an aspiring model and teacher, Wendy has her hopes set on a career in sports broadcasting. She looks forward to completing her graduate studies and being done with school so she can pursue at least one of her many passions.

Modeling in photo shoots and swimsuit catalogs for the past six years, Wendy is about to wrap up her graduate courses in special education at St. John’s University in December. She said she looks to get back into the modeling scene with auditions already lined up with FHM and STUFF magazines.

Even though her future could be in modeling or in teaching, Wendy craves the desire to earn her living with yet another other love – baseball.

Having three younger brothers, all currently in college, high school and semi-professional levels, Wendy is a die-hard Mets fan who regularly attends games and has aspirations of getting into the field of play calling.
In Queens, Wendy said she enjoys bike riding in Flushing Meadows Corona Park and going out to dinner at the many restaurants on Bell Boulevard. She said she spends about 45 minutes a day working out and she also eats right. After all, staying fit is what keeps Wendy’s modeling career going steady.

“I’m too short to do runway,” she said, “but I like being in front of the camera, especially the flirtatious aspect.”

Rhymin Simon Joins Seinfeld

PaulSimon, Jerry Seinfeld

Queens comedian Jerry Seinfeld and fellow native son Paul Simon are teaming up in Los Angeles to take part in a benefit concert for autism Sept. 24.

Emceed by Tom Brokaw, the Kodak Center will host “One Night Only: A Concert for Autism Speaks,” where both Queens born performers will look to raise money to research the epidemic’s causes and raise awareness of the developmental disorder.

According to one of the event’s organizers, Seinfeld approached the Autism Speaks organization because of a number of friends whose children suffer from autism. According to published reports, Seinfeld then reached out to Simon, who agreed to help out.

Tickets went on sale on Aug. 15 and are priced at $100.

Pretty in Pink

Lady Pink of Astoria was recently named one of the most beautiful New Yorkers by New York Magazine.

Murals by Astoria-based graffiti icon Lady Pink look pretty good.

And apparently, so does she.

Pink was just named to New York Magazine’s list of the 50 Most Beautiful New Yorkers.

The curator of Webster Hall, who nominated Pink to the list, said, “She’s got that petite-dynamo factor that drives me crazy.”

Also on the list from Queens were Susan Sarandon, a Rockette, up-and-coming-musician Princess Superstar and 90-year-old actress Mimi Weddell.

Home Sweet Home

Though Nasir Jones, aka Nas, proudly touts his Queensbridge-upbringing when he raps, some people haven’t quite got the message.

In a recent article on a music Web site announcing Nas upcoming tour dates, he is referred to as “the Long Island emcee.”

Ouch.

Singing Model

Tomoko sang the Japanese National Anthem at a recent Staten Island Yankees Game. She was billed as a "Japenese R&B Powerhouse," a month ago when she was our Tribune "Model of Queens" on July 21, 2005.

Big Fish In Small Pond

Flesh eating fish have been found in Meadow Lake.

Flesh-eating snakeheads are on the prowl in Meadow Lake at Flushing Meadows Corona Park and scientists are scrambling to hook them before they attack.

A routine study by the Department of Environmental Conservation found four air-breathing and meat-eating snakehead fish, ranging in size from 15 to 28 inches, in the popular lake recently and have no idea where they came from.

The deadly species are not known to the area, not even the continent, as their habitat stretches from southern Siberia to south central China. The snakeheads are considered a culinary delicacy in China and Korea and last year, a ban was placed on their importation and sale.

Perhaps some people just couldn’t get enough of the snakehead delicacy and sought to end any other sea life in the lake for their own tasty treat.

And no swimming please!

All Hail The King

Queens gave birth to the supermarket when this King Kullen was opened 75 years ago on the corner of Jamaica Ave. & 175th St.

Fashions may come and go – and so, too, do supermarkets.
Over the last few years the Key Food stores in Queens have been mostly replaced by CVS. Smaller stores fade away as bigger Stop & Shops and Pathmarks make inroads into Queens.

But the granddaddy of them all was King Kullen. Founded by Queens native Michael J. Cullen in 1930, the first King Kullen supermarket – the first supermarket ever – once stood at the corner of 176th Street and Jamaica Avenue.

As the supermarket turns 75 this month, take a minute to reflect on the changing face of grocers in Queens.
Remember those who once hawked their wares proudly, those who may come in the future and the one that started it all.
