Astoria Hair Raiser

Keila
Home: Astoria
Age: 30
Height: 5’6"
Weight: 115 lbs
Stats: 33-25-35

This trained cosmetologist has been in the modeling game for four years on and off, and came into it through a side door, of sorts.

“My friends are photographers, and when they need help or just want a new face, they would come to me,” she said. “They said I should try it.”

The work has been pretty consistent since.

“I have done some editorial work, a lot of portfolios, and I have done some flyers for clubs – it’s great,” Keila said.

On average she works as a model twice a month, but spends most of her time at her salon or working on her paintings.

“I’ve been painting for about six years,” Keila said. “I paint abstracts on canvas, and I’ve sold a couple of paintings.”

This Brooklyn native moved to Astoria when she was 15, graduated from Bryant and went to a place in Flushing called Hair International to get her cosmetology license.

“I love Queens and I wouldn’t move for anything – especially where I am in Astoria,” Keila said.

Though she says she hangs out mostly in Astoria, she does enjoy spending time at the bars and lounges in Woodside and going shopping in Flushing.

“Almost al my friends have moved to Queens,” the trend-setting Keila said, noting that it is only within the last few years that people she knows have wanted to move to Queens. “Before, nobody wanted to live here.”

It looks like we’ve got just the bait to get people to come here.

Love From Astoria To Philly

A Queens couple was the first to get married at an on-field July 1 ceremony at Citizens Bank Park, the new home of the Philadelphia Phillies. Anna Forman-Greenwald, 26 from Carversville, Penn. and Zack Pelta-Heller, 26, originally from Philadelphia, had a ceremony under a chuppah behind home plate. The couple presently lives in Astoria, but will relocate to Penn. before the baseball season ends. As far as we know, no citywide school tournament games were relocated to accommodate this wedding.

The Katz Meow

Councilwoman Melinda Katz belts it out at the Mets game.

Councilwoman Melinda Katz has been singing in public so much lately, it’s enough to make people think she’s dropping out of politics and taking up the musical life.

Fresh from her performance of the National Anthem at a Brooklyn Cyclones game, Katz sang “God Bless America” at the Mets July 3 outing against the Pirates. The crowd, some of whom were unaware of who she was, seemed to react well to Katz, who belted out the piece during the seventh inning stretch without missing a note.

It was hard to pick out exactly where she stood, but thanks to the Diamondvision, everyone could see her excited face.

Council Speedster

For New York City Council members to represent their constituents, they should become acquainted with the neighborhoods and possess good communication skills. Then why is it that the driver of a silver Accord bearing the license plate “City Council 4” seemed to be blind to everyone around her as she was driving?

As her little car slowly approached Union Turnpike from 179th Street, after weaving through a series of double-parked cars along the one-way street, the driver narrowly escaped hitting an approaching vehicle when she forgot that she was entering two-way traffic. After skittishly making a left onto Union, she proceeded to switch from one lane to the other, her left blinker still on, making it impossible to know where she was going or what she was doing. Suddenly, she pulled over to the right, left blinker still on, and just barely avoided a rear-ender as she struggled to enter a parking spot.

Maybe this Council member (or member’s wife) should stay off the road and just stick to sitting in an office under heaps of paper or giving press conferences, this way the roads of Queens may be safer.

Take A Leap

At 6:39 and 13 seconds (a.m.) on July 20, the world may change – if only we can get 600,000,000 people together.

Professor Hans Niesward and fellow scientists at Germany’s Department of Gravitationsphysik have created Jump Day to help save the world. The concept is simple, yet somewhat ludicrous. If 600 million people jump at the same time – at that exact time, when the Earth is in just the right position – the Earth’s orbit with shift, ever so slightly.

The overall effect is a more balanced average of temperatures, and a slight temperature reduction overall – effectively stopping global warming. Skeptics have thrown a wet blanket on the theory, noting that the worldwide overall effect would equal moving the Earth about the distance of a hydrogen atom.

Regardless, it’s worth a shot, isn’t it? If it means having to shovel less snow in the winter and not get as scorched in the summer in Queens, we’re all for it.
