Aspiring Kid On The Block

Aspiring model Estephany Insante dreams of a life on the catwalk.

The Jackson Heights resident and office clerk has made becoming a model one of her lifelong goals.

“I’ve always wanted to do modeling,” she said.
Steph got her first taste of the modeling world early-on. As a teenager, she helped model in community fashion shows. While it was a far cry from the high-stakes world of professional modeling, it was a great introductory experience, she said.

“It was great; at first I was a little scared, but after the first time I loved it,” Steph said.

Even though Steph said she would love to model fulltime, the adventurous Queens girl is still looking at other career options. She is currently applying to criminal justice programs in hopes of becoming a homicide detective.
“I like the thrill of it – the action,” she said.
When she isn’t working, you might find Steph around town at the mall or one of the parks. Her favorite places to go are the Queens Center Mall and Astoria Park, she said.
Steph also spends her time dancing and practicing women’s fashion design.

“I just hope I can get a chance,” Steph asserted.

Bacon in the Park

Eighties icon Kevin Bacon came to Queens Tuesday night, not as an actor, but as a rock star.

The actor, who has starred in memorable films such as “Mystic River,” “JFK,” “Apollo 13” and “A Few Good Men,” headlined the Theatre in the Park Gala at Flushing Meadows Corona Park along with his brother, Michael Bacon, in a rock performance as part of the Bacon Brothers Duo.

Attendees paid up to $400 for front row seats to the 70-minute performance benefiting the performing arts.
The theatre, housed in the New York State Pavilion, was originally designed for the 1964 World’s Fair. The stage reopened in 1993 and now hosts nearly 400 performances annually.

We Like Mike

Queens favorite Mike Piazza

Mike Piazza, perhaps the best-hitting catcher in major league history and an eight-year veteran of the New York Mets, announced his retirement from baseball on Tuesday.
The 39-year-old, who had not been signed to a team in 2008, finished his 16-year career with a .308 batting average and 427 home runs. He began his career with the Dodgers, but headed to Flushing – by way of a one week stint with the Marlins – in 1998.

The only question left now is which hat he will wear when inducted into the Hall of Fame, possibly as early as 2013. While the decision will be made by Hall of Fame officials in consultation with Piazza, the player seems to have already hinted what he would like to see happen.

“I have to say that my time with the Mets wouldn’t have been the same without the greatest fans in the world,” Piazza said in a statement. “One of the hardest moments of my career was walking off the field at Shea Stadium and saying goodbye. My relationship with you made my time in New York the happiest of my career, and for that, I will always be grateful.”

From Picasso To Dylan

A series of Pablo Picasso prints went on display at Queensborough Community College this week. The exhibit presents a new side of Picasso, an artist traditionally celebrated for his paintings.

The idea that Picasso dabbled in the printmaking medium isn’t shocking. Perhaps more surprising is the fact that former Queens resident Bob Dylan tried his hand at the visual arts.
Next month, London’s Halcyon Gallery will showcase a series of drawings and sketches that Dylan completed while touring between 1989 and 1992. “The Drawn Blank Series” is the most comprehensive collection of Dylan’s artwork to date.
Maybe next, it’ll come to Queensborough.

Nas Backs Down From Title

Nas, the Queens-bred rap legend has backed down, or been told to change the controversial title of his upcoming album.

Originally slated for release last winter the controversial N-word title has been changed. The album, still delayed, will be untitled. It is his ninth release.

In a statement the Illmatic emcee said he isn’t bothered by the name change. He feels people will remember the original title no matter what the album is called.

“The people will always know what the real title of this album is and what to call it, it’s important to me that this album gets to the fans...It’s been a long time coming. I want my fans to know that creatively and lyrically, they can expect the same content and the same messages. It’s that important.”

In a survey conducted by the online magazine SOHH.com in response to the album’s title, out of 1,899 respondents 85.27 percent said they were not offended by Nas’ decision to name the disc N*gger. 14.73 percent of those polled said they were.

Rest Assured

On Monday night, Horatio Caine’s fans sat shell shocked as he lay there in a pool of his own blood.

Is the show over? Is David Caruso, the Forest Hills native going onto greener pastures? No! Caine, will be back for the seventh season of CSI Miami.

Can you imagine the CBS show without Caine? Those one liners, the head cocked to one side, those cool shades, who could pull that off?

Queens Man's Sub Theft

Queens man sells sub parts

A Queens man had the gall to steal huge parts from a submarine and sell it as scrap metal.

Frank Spaulding of Jamaica was convicted May 20 after he was busted in 2006 for pilfering from the USS Hampton while it was being refurbished in Virginia.

Spaulding made away with two anti-torpedo dome covers used to confuse approaching torpedoes. The domes weighed in at 230 pounds apiece and had an estimated value of $70,000 tax-payer dollars.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Virginia said Spaulding sold the counterattack parts as scrap metal for about $2,000 to a dealer in Virginia Beach.
He is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 21.
