| Flushing's Fran
|
With summer on the horizon I know you don’t want to be cooped up in your closet apartments. How about enjoying a bit of familiar with a twist? Intrigued are you?
Well, all I can say is Fran Drescher staring alongside the New York Philharmonic in a semi-staged production of “Camelot.”
The Flushing native will play sorceress Morgan le Fey, but don’t worry, Fran will not be singing – ear plugs are not necessary.
The production will run from May 7 through May 10 at Lincoln Center and will be broadcast May 8 nationwide on PBS.

Flushing’s Iron Man

| Iron Man was directed by one of Flushing's own.

“Iron Man,” the latest creation from writer-actor-director and Flushing native Jonathan Favreau, hit theatres this weekend to a chorus of critical praise.
“Iron Man kicks off summer on a blazing high note and practically dares the competition to measure up,” Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers said.
Iron Man, based on the Marvel Comics character, tells the story of Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., a billionaire defense contractor and weapons manufacturer, who seeks redemption after being captured in a weapons deal gone wrong.
Stark swears off the weapons trade and dons a state-of-the-art mechanical suit, granting him superhuman power and the persona of Iron Man, which he uses to combat the weapons he once made.
Favreau, who directed the film, grew up in Flushing and
briefly attended Queens College before turning to comedy and eventually film. Favreau has written, acted and directed in 25 films since 1993.

Queens-born rapper Q-Tip has enlisted presidential candidate Barack Obama for his soon to be released solo title, “The Renaissance.”
He has also endorsed the Illinois senator, following several other musicians and artists, including fellow Queensboro hip-hop star Nas.
“I’ve got Norah Jones on there, but Barack is the big one,” Tip told the Post. “You’ll see what happens, I can’t reveal too much.”
Along with Obama, featured on one of the tracks, Spike Lee will also make a cameo spot appearance on the album, set to be released this June. The Renaissance will be the Queens rapper’s first solo CD since 1999’s “Amplified.”
Nas, the Queensbridge rap star said of Obama, “There’s no two ways to look at it, man. The man’s got what it takes. He’s serious,” the rapper told MTV in a wide-ranging interview, “As a kid, you always think, ‘We’ll never see a black president,’ you know?”
“So I think now, with Obama having a great chance of winning, I think [with] black and white, there’s been something lifted off their shoulders,” Nas said.
“It’s like, ‘This can happen. This can be great.’ And it’s about time,” he said.

A Queens Role
“Gypsy” is back on Broadway. But this latest incarnation of the Styne/Sondheim musical represents a stark departure from past productions.
For years, only Queens actresses were cast in the starring role of Rose.
Astoria-born Ethel Merman originated the role in 1959. And Angela Landsbury, who briefly lived in Douglaston, won a Tony Award for her portrayal of the ultimate stage mother in 1974. A few years ago, Ozone Park native Bernadette Peters played the part and, like Merman, received a Tony nomination. Peters appeared on the 2003 Tony Awards telecast to sing the musical’s finale song, “Rose’s Turn.”
Well, apparently it’s Long Island’s turn, because Northport’s very own Patti LuPone is currently starring as Rose.
Queens 3, Long Island 1.

Queens Brew
Are you looking for a great bottle of wine to go with that special dinner? Well, if you can hold off for just a couple more months you can have wine from the Queens’ own vineyard.
The Queens County Farm Museum in Floral Park is in the process of bottling its brew and patrons may be able to swig the boroughs finest as early as October. The vineyard was planted in 2004 and harvested in 2006. The harvested product fermented for more than a year in barrels from France.
Drink up.
