Anything But Average

Kelly Ann Kirckpatrick
Home: Laurelton
Age: 10
Height: 4’10"
Weight: 83 lbs.

Not many 10-year-olds can claim that they’ve conquered the flashing lights and billboard spectacle that is Times Square, but Laurelton-native Kelly Ann Kirckpatrick is not your average 10-year-old.

With almost two years of modeling experience under her kid-sized belt, Kelly Ann has accomplished more before middle school than hordes of full-grown would-be models around the city.

Shoppers strolling by the gigantic Toys R' Us store in the heart of Times Square can find a larger-than-life Kelly Ann smiling down from one of the rotating billboards. “It is an advertisement for the new Secret Central dolls,” she explained. “They are these mini-dolls that come with a note that says who they like and the story behind them.”
Her career began with success at a beauty pageant, where she won a scholarship to a modeling class and the attention of a Manhattan management firm. “I’ve always had a love for doing stuff on stage, for acting and dancing. I used to always watch TV and think about being like those people,” Kelly Ann said.

Her winning smile and super-cute appeal can now be found moving merchandise for companies like Fuji Film, Target and Goodies – but Kelly Ann has her eye on bigger things. “It one of my biggest dreams and one of my biggest hopes right now,” she said of modeling. “I just want to pursue it and if everything turns out well, I’ll be a TV reporter or a fashion model.”

Soundtrack for a Senator

She may have sat out the big dance for the White House, but Senator Hillary Clinton couldn’t resist the dance when she came to Queens.

Clinton was here to speak to at the St. Patrick’s Day luncheon hosted by the Queens Chamber of Commerce. There, Clinton was serenaded by live Irish music and traditional dancing. Not to outdone, she grabbed Queens District Attorney Richard Brown and started dancing. After drawing a roomful of applauds, she made her way to podium and delivered a heartfelt thanks to her dance partner and the crowd, then launched into her speech.

When asked why he thought Clinton chose him as her dance partner, Brown told our QConf sources, “We got caught up in the moment.”

Who knows what could have happened if Clinton had arrived on time, and heard Congressman Joe Crowley, a former Irish rock singer at whose home Clinton spent the night during her Seante campaign.

As for the music that really moves Hillary Clinton, our sources confirm she’s married to a former politician who also plays saxophone.

Split Personality

What do Queens’ favorite almost second lady and the world’s favorite homemaker turned jailbird have in common?
A look, that’s what.

Let’s face it, Martha Stewart and Geraldine Ferraro have some very similar features. We hear Geraldine’s record is clean, though.

A ‘Special’ Queens Mention

TV Chef Mario Batali

Famed television chef Mario Batali knows his Italian cooking.

The man has three shows on the Food Network about Italian food, wrote three books on the subject, has studied with master chefs in the Northern Italian town of Borgo Capanne, and owns several Manhattan restaurants, including world-renowned eatery Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca.

Yes, he knows his pasta, sauce and olive oil, and on a recent episode of his show “Ciao America” – which features him touring the United States to find the best Italian food – he showed he knows his Italian sandwiches, as well.
On the March 24 episode, which aired nationwide, he toured the nation looking for the best Italian sandwiches, and ended up in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas and – you guessed it – Queens.

Batali featured the “Mama’s Special” at Leo Latticini’s in Corona, a place that he said has the best juicy, jumbo Italian hero in the country. The sandwich features thick bread, peppered ham, Genoa salami, prosciutto di parma, hot cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, fresh homemade mozzarella, and several other thinly-sliced Italian meats.

Batali helped one of the owners construct the sandwich before digging and giving it rave reviews.

He said the sandwich “could almost seem overstuffed,” but isn’t, and said the juiciness of the mushrooms is perfect. He added with a grin, “Mama is special.”
Mangia!

Shooting Hoops

Royal Ivey, hoopster from Hollis.

A Queens kid has made it big in college basketball.
Royal Ivey, a Hollis resident who was in the Final Four last year with the Texas Longhorns, was named to the 2004 Coaches All-Big 12 men’s basketball team as an honorable mention.

The all-star team, which honors top-level players in the Big 12 NCAA basketball conference, is not the only super star team Ivey was named to.

He was also named as a member of the United States Basketball Writers Association All-District 7.

The senior who told Conf he was “A Queens boy all the way” also competed in the March Madness NCAA tournament with fellow Queens native Mark McCarroll from the University of Pittsburgh. They both lost.

Still not bad, guys. Way to make Queens proud!

Taking It Easy

Hollis’ own Ja Rule announced his retirement last year, and what a retirement it is turning out to be.

His oppressive feud with 50 Cent continues undeterred, he is the frontrunner for the starring role in “Julius,” a movie adaptation of a comic book that modernizes Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, and the Miami Police Department announced recently that it is keeping six-inch thick dossiers on superstar rappers in an effort to quell violence, Ja Rule and 50 Cent included – the two both spent time in the area.

Miami police stake out and trail Ja Rule as he gets off his plane, checks in and out of his hotel and comes and goes from his favorite nightspots.

Ja Rule told the World Entertainment News Network that he is trying to improve his image and might even start work on a new album.

“I feel like a new artist,” he said.
Ahhhh, retirement.
