Amazing Grace

Name: Kelly Grace
Home: Astoria
Age: 23
Height: 5’ 6"
Weight: 120 lbs
Stats: 34-25-36

From the corn-fed state of Nebraska to the edgy East River shoreline of Astoria, this Omaha beauty made her way here via Northeastern University in Boston.

“I’ve lived in Astoria for almost a year now,” Kelly said in a recent interview. Before that I was in Boston for 5 years going to college.”

After getting her degree in organizational and public communication, Kelly made the move to the Big Apple to pursue her dream in a completely unrelated field – acting.

“I had always been interested in acting, but I also tried to be logical,” she said. “I figured I’d pick a career and do something I always was interested in, whether it was in PR, community relations.”

“But I kind of realized that I would regret it for the rest of my life if I didn’t push the acting, though,” Kelly said. “At least I’ll always have the degree to fall back on.”

Kelly is planning to start taking official acting classes this month, but she started modeling when she was just six years old.

“The modeling is really fun,” Kelly said. “You go in for a shoot and feel like a princess or a star. It’s great. Besides, there are more jobs out there in modeling than in acting.”

While she works to build a name for herself, Kelly is enjoying her free time in Astoria.

“I love it,” she said of her "young community." “When I got here I had no idea where I was going to go. I knew I couldn’t afford Manhattan, and I heard so much more about Brooklyn than Queens. But I had a friend who lived in Astoria who told me it was so cute.”

“I’ve never felt unsafe here,” Kelly said. “There also isn’t a need to go to Manhattan every weekend. Everything you need is here – and the beer garden is amazing.”

XXX PS1

Untitled by Robert Gober from Into Me/ Out of Me at PS1

Watch out parents, now may not be the time to take the kiddies to PS 1. Word has it that their current exhibit, Into Me/ Out of Me, may be a little on the graphic side.

The art center pitches the display as a historical contemplation about how artists have viewed the

boundaries and limitations of the body as it interacts with the physical world. Sounds fancy, but the exhibit consists of the following:

“Graphic photos of people Untitled by Robert Gober from Into Me/ Out of Me at PS1 throwing up; a sculpture of worms swarming over skeletons tied to a tree; a video of a nude woman using a barbed wire ring as a hula hoop; a video of a woman applying makeup while apparently having sex with a man behind her; a sculpture of a woman squatting with her pants down; various photographs of sadomasochistic gay sex and men masturbating,” according to a review from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

We’re all for free speech and artistic expression here at the QConf, but we’re just giving fair warning. Good thing Rudy is out running for president, or he may try to shut it down.

Def Jam Swan Song

Queens Native LL Cool J

Rapper LL Cool J said fellow Southeast Queens hip-hopper 50 Cent would executive-produce his last album for Def Jam Records set to be released in the fall.

The album, titled “Todd Smith, Part 2: Back to Cool,” “is my last Def Jam record, so I wanted to make it something special and something really unique and kinda get back to my roots a little bit,” Cool J told Chronic Magazine. “50 reminds me a lot of the things that I used to do and the places I used to be in my life, and I think we can have a good time together.”

LL was the first artist signed to Def Jam Records, the company founded by Russel Simmons, brother of Hollis rap superstar the Rev. Joseph “Run” Simmons of Run-DMC.

LL and 50 can currently be heard together on the remix of LL’s single “Freeze.”

Out And Proud

If you didn’t know it beforehand, and if you were passing through Times Square any day this past week at 5:13 p.m., you sure know now that Queens gay activist Brendan Fay, is indeed married. He and Tom Moulton tied the knot in July 2003 in Canada, and Jesus Lebron, head of the activist group Marriage Equality, paid to share the wedding picture at the crossroads of the world as an anniversary present.

Dylan Sings About Alicia Keys

Bob Dylan is writing, thinking and singing about Queens girl Alicia Keys

Bob Dylan has got Laurelton home girl Alicia Keys on his mind. Dylan sings about Keys on his upcoming album Modern Times.

The album’s title track bears lyrics to the effect “I was thinking about Alicia Keys, couldn’t help from crying/When she was born in Hell’s Kitchen, I was living down the line/I’m wondering where in the world Alicia Keys could be/I been looking for her even clean through Tennessee.”

Keys could hardly believe it when she heard about the song from mp3.com news.

“I just knew somebody had to be playin’ with me! How could such a legend know me? And bigger than that, want to write about me? I haven’t heard the song yet – it’s top secret. But I’m crazy excited about it and I’m honored to be on his mind,” she told mp3.com news.

Modern Times is the 65-yearold Dylan’s first studio album in five years.

Hoopla!

Christ the King Regional High School’s Larry Davis will be leaving us in Queens to head off to Seton Hall. The Middle Village native has agreed to enter Seton Hall in the fall after being released by North Carolina, his original choice.

Hailed as one of the best guards in the nation playing high school ball, the All-City player helped lead the Christ The King team to the New York City Catholic High School title game this year. He was ranked the 83rd best national prospect by USA Today for the 2006 class.

Queens’ loss will be South Orange’s gain. Let’s hope he doesn’t forget all the little people who cheered him on here in Queens.
