Actress, Model, Writer
|
|
JindaLai Rivera Home: Fresh Meadows Age: 28 Height: 5’5'’ Weight: 137 lbs Stats: 34-27-36
JindaLai Rivera is well aware of the best way to forge a career as an actress.
“Modeling is one of the best ways to start out,” says the 28-year-old Fresh Meadows resident. “A lot of agents will send you out on modeling jobs when you first get started [acting]. That’s kind of how I got into modeling. It was a way to get paid so I could go out and do an independent film.”
Rivera is no stranger to the pages of magazines, the screen or the stage. She’s done both print and runway work since getting started in the entertainment industry seven years ago and she’s appeared in nine feature films.
And now she’s trying her hand at writing. She’s completed a children’s book called “Music Man” and is scheduled to start shooting her screenplay for a short film called “Reflex” in two weeks. The Nubian Heritage Bookstore in Jamaica has already scheduled a screening of that film as well as a book signing.
So given her impressive resume, which of her endeavors is the most challenging?
“Definitely acting,” she says. “Not to say that modeling is easy, but with acting you really have to push your emotions out there. That’s the biggest challenge.”

| Speech School Dropout
|
| Flushing Nanny Fran Drescher
|
Fran Drescher, Flushing’s most famous JAP (as in Jewish American Princess), has turned her distinct Queens accent into a trademark, utilizing it in both her hit sitcom The Nanny and such movies as Jack and The Beautician and the Beast. Early in her acting career, however, what is now one of her distinguished assets was a hindrance, costing her roles and prompting her agent to suggest she takes speech classes to get rid of her nasal “Noo Yawk” twang.
Drescher listened, taking at least two classes in early and mid 1980s. Fortunately—both for her fans and her career—she failed miserably.

Shock Jock Itch?
|
| Queens native, Howard Stern
|
So, the nationally known shock jock—and borough’s child—Howard Stern is going satellite in his quest to give the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) the slip and “bury” his newly found nemesis, Clear Channel Entertainment.
Has Stern considered, however, that Sirius, with whom he signed a multi-year, multi-million dollar deal, has lost over $1 billion since the company was founded? On Oct. 6, announcing his inevitable departure from the FM radio waves, Stern said on his show that working for Sirius will be “a breath of fresh air.” He should be careful what he wishes for; if Sirius’ ambitious gamble on Stern as revenue producer does not pan out, Howard might just end up on the street, breathing all the fresh air he wants.

Springer Chairing Debates?
|
| Forest Hills grad Jerry Springer
|
Forest Hills High School graduate Jerry Springer, who later became the Mayor of Cincinnati and host of his own television talk show, wants to get back into politics. But his television career is keeping him out.
After opting out of a Senate race in Ohio, Springer returned to his day job, as host of the Jerry Springer Show, where bizarre love affairs are aired in front of a rowdy audience.
Sounds like fun?
During an interview on a local radio show, Springer lamented over the recent presidential debates. The radio host asked Springer, “How come you’re not moderating a debate?”
Alluding to how debates are settled on his show, Springer responded, “Because the chairs aren’t mobile.”

Public Service
Archbishop Molloy High School in Briarwood apparently knows how to teach its students about public service.
The school churned out (clockwise from upper left): Jackson Heights State Senator John Sabini, Clinton Cabinet Member, former guv aspiriant, Andrew Cuomo, current Police Commish Raymond Kelley, Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes, and others.
The school is located down the street from Borough Hall, one block north of Queens Boulevard, on Manton Street, which happens to be the name of the current Queens County Democratic Party leader. Hmmmm?

Trump Eye For The Kerry Guy
Move over Queer Guys, the guy who wants to give Presidential nominee John Kerry a makeover is the billionaire Jamaica Estates native, Donald Trump. While on Hardball with Chris Matthews, The Donald said Democratic nominee John Kerry “probably had the worst make up I’ve ever seen.” Then, Donald, who constantly fights off charges that he’s sporting a hairpiece, said Kerry should get himself a real makeup artist. “He cold have borrowed one of yours or one of mine,” Trump told Matthews.
Slowest Finger
Hillcrest High School graduate Ray Romano plays a guy who is often slow on the uptake in his hit sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond.” Reality, apparently, is not far from fantasy; Romano was the “slowest finger” on the celebrity version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” going last when no opponents were left to beat him.
He did manage to pull in $125,000, which he donated to the NYPD’ D.A.R.E. Unit.
