A Regular Corona Gal

Tanya Mack
Home: Corona
Age: 29
Height: 5’ 10"
Weight: 145 lbs.
Stats: 34-26-38

“I have been modeling on and off since I was 16,” this Corona beauty explained in a recent interview. Today, 13 years later, she still remembers the tale of how she was discovered – which is not unlike many others.

“I was walking down the street and someone approached me,” she said, noting that the experience left a bad taste in her mouth. “I was a bit jaded by that experience, but you live and you learn.”

Though Tanya started out on the runways, she has made her way into print work and is enjoying modeling on a part-time basis.

Her real love, after all, has always been on the slightly darker side of life.

Tanya attends classes at John Jay College of Criminal Justice where she is studying to be a forensic pathologist – the guys you see on “CSI” – well, sort of.

“No one at the school watches ‘CSI’ because it is so unrealistic,” Tanya said.

While not in front of the lens or in school, Tanya spends a good chunk of her time working at a celebrity trainer’s gym, which she said is a great way to meet a lot of good people.

When hanging out in Queens, Tanya likes to go to Rockaway Beach – “It’s one of my favorite places,” she said. “I also go to a few lounges on Queens Boulevard, and when we’ve got good weather I love to go to Flushing Meadow Park.”

Though she has a brain for science and a bod for fun, Tanya wants people to know that she is a very down-to-Earth person.

“I’m so regular,” she said. “I like hanging out with regular, grounded, real people. That’s just who I am.”

iLanguage

Queens native Peter Galante is bringing language learning to the mainstream. As the creator of “JapanesePod101.com,” Galante has provided people seeking to learn Japanese the ability to go online and download fun one-hour lessons. Podcasts are also available in Greek, Spanish, Italian, German, English, Korean and other languages.

Perhaps it was growing up in Queens, where more than 100 languages are spoken. that inspired Galante and his language i-magination.

Rock Star Ed

Some day, if he is lucky, Rory Lancman (r.) will get the rock star treatment currently reserved for such dashing icons as Ed Koch.

As the black Town Car pulled up to the curb, the women rushed to its side last week. Okay, maybe they didn’t exactly rush, but for middle-aged women they walked pretty swiftly towards the Lincoln that just turned its engine off.

Some fluffing their red and others fluffing their brunette-washed gray strands in the reflection of the darkened windows, the women took a step back as the rear passenger door opened. A few of them drew in a deep breath releasing it as the man inside extended his leg from the car placing his foot on the curb.

“Hi Mayor Koch! Hi Mayor Koch!” a few of them hollered, while others just gazed pursing their red lips. Making his way through the handshakes, back pats and intrigued women; Koch stepped up to the podium to endorse another candidate -- this time it was Rory Lancman.

Praise For Agassi

Left: Andre Agassi. Right: John McEnroe

Our boy Johnnie Mac (Douglaston native John McEnroe) has had some high praise for Andre Agassi, the veteran tennis player who ended his career last weekend at the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

“You know, to me, it’s sort of ironic that the USTA made this great decision to name the tennis center the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center,” he said during the drawing for placement for the upcoming tournament.

“When I think of people that have done more off the court or as much off the court, I think of Arthur Ashe and Billie Jean King. Something tells me that in 20 years we may be saying that about Andre Agassi,” McEnroe, who serves once again as a commentator for CBS’s coverage of the event, added. “ Incredibly, what he’s done on the court, I think he may do more off the court, as well, as he leaves the game as a player.”

A Spectacle

The Queens Zoo or Borough Hall?

The New York Mets have made an attempt to boost Queens tourism throughout this season with “Discover Queens” television commercials and a commitment to little leagues throughout the borough.

One of the new features of the Mets’ newfound salute to the borough in which they play is the “Queens Scene It” game, a small quiz which is displayed on the Shea Stadium video board at each home game. The game begins with a fuzzy picture of a notable Queens location, and clues are given as the picture slowly comes into clear view. Before the answer is given, the stadium crowd tries to guess what it is.

At a recent Mets game, the “Queens Scene It” quiz showed up on the video screen after the fifth inning. As the blurry picture began coming into view, one of the clues given by the stadium announcer was that the location was “home to spectacled bears.”

Upon hearing the hint, one wily fan screamed out “Borough Hall!”

Of course, the real answer is the Queens Zoo, but apparently, the fan feels that at least Borough Hall can provide the “bear necessities” of Queens services.
