A Kid Named Troy
|
|
Troy Christopher Holston Jr. Home: Woodhaven Age: 9 Height: 5 ft. Weight: 82 lbs
There a new kid in town, and his name is Troy Christopher Holston Jr.
The Woodhaven Manor resident is an aspiring actor/model. A student at the Bethlehem Christian Academy, Troy is attempting to break into the industry with the help of Camera 2 Studios, a Forest Hills-based agency. He has not been called for any modeling or acting jobs yet, but he has been actively involved in the process of taking classes, practicing skills and learning the trade for over a year.
“I think that Troy will not just focus on being a runway model, or just an actor,” said Troy’s mother, Monique Holston. “I think he will do a combination of both of acting and fashion.”
Troy’s favorite clothing styles to model are hip-hop and sports. No surprise there, since his favorite labels are Echo and Sean Jean, and he is an avid fan of baseball and basketball. Troy is an all-star outfielder, third baseman and pitcher for one of the teams in the Ozone Howard baseball league.
“Troy loves modeling and acting, but his first love is sports,” Monique Holston said. “His height gives him an advantage in basketball, but surprisingly he really loves baseball.
Despite living in Queens, Troy is a supporter of the team playing in the House That Ruth Built.
“I like Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez,” Troy said when asked about his favorite New York Yankees.
In life, Troy admires his mother the most “because she takes care of us.” When it comes to modeling, Troy doesn’t model alone either; his sister, Jazmyn, a previous Model of Queens, is trying her hand at modeling as well. There is much more support than competition between the two, their mother said.
“I don’t think they are competitive,” mom emphasized, “I think that Troy looks to his sister for reassurance, and a sense of familiarity, since they started modeling at the same time.”

| Staff of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" with St John's Law Clinic students in front of the Ali's Jamaica home
|
ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” stopped by Queens over the summer thanks to the Law Clinic at St. John’s University to help a woman who, along with her two adopted sons, had been left homeless due to an irresponsible contractor who ran off with her money and left her with an uninhabitable home.
When her boys, 12-year-olds Paul and Kuran, were infants, orphaned by a crack-addicted mother, Lucy Ali of Jamaica, adopted them. As the now-healthy boys approached adolescence, she wanted to add more space to her one-bedroom, one-bathroom house and was grateful when she was approved for a home improvement loan.
According to the folks at ABC, Ali gave the contractor a large sum of money to begin the renovations, but the contractor never finished the job, leaving a gaping hole in her roof. The unfinished second level was exposed to the elements, robbery and foraging animals. During one of her periodic visits to her ruined, uninhabitable house, she was alarmed to even find squatters. The Ali house sat without a roof as Lucy, a retired finance manager, struggled to keep up with the monthly mortgage payments.
With the house rendered unfit for habitation, Lucy and her sons had been living as urban refugees, hop-scotching from hotel to hotel, to relatives’ couches and to a homeless shelter.
This summer the crew came in, ripped the house apart and delivered, what in all sense, was a brand new house, complete with state-of-the-art appliances, a gigantic kitchen, games for the kids and a new sense of pride for the Ali family. The show aired on ABC Oct. 31.

'Headline'
This page has poked fun at some of the better missteps by famous and not so famous in our borough. We are not above the poignant scrutiny of the QConf sarcastic eye.
Brian Rafferty promised us a smooth transition when he took the helm of the Queens Tribune as Managing Editor last week. Allegedly it was with the desire to make improvements on our award-winning 34-year-old community newspaper group.
Perhaps the new editor needs to take some of his own advice and always check the page twice. The lead letter on the Edit Page, should have had an appropriate title referencing the subject of the letter, instead, the page went to press in six out of nine editions with a headline that read, “Headline.”
Perhaps it was his training?
Hope it’s uphill from here.

| Forest Hills' Susan Sarandon
|
Playboy has been pursuing Forest Hills native Susan Sarandon to pose for the cover for some time now.
“They have been talking to me for years,” she said. “I got a lot of lunches out of Playboy.”
The aging Sarandon is still considered to be a sex symbol and Playboy Magazine wants to feature her. But Sarandon said although she would like to pose for the famous sex rag, she intends to spare her two sons the embarrassment and politely decline Playboy’s offer.
“I can’t do it because my kids would kill me,” she said.

Vote or Die?

| A strange t-shirt for one Queens rapper?
|
The bullet-dodging rapper 50 Cent may have another near death experience.
The Jamaica native removed his bullet-proof vest and donned a “Vote or Die” t-shirt as part of P. Diddy’s get out the vote campaign. While 50 showed up to the photo shoot, as did fellow rapper Ludacris and millionaire exhibitionist Paris Hilton, none showed up to vote.
50, aka Curtis Jackson, may have a good excuse: he’s a felon and therefore, ineligible to vote. But the rapper who was hit by 9 shots before becoming a multi-million dollar attraction, most likely will be sporting his bullet-proof vest next time you see him.

Food Fight!

Look out! It’s a heavyweight fight in the food district. Down the street from Spaghetti Park and the Lemon Ice King of Corona, two oddly paired establishments just became neighbors: Dunkin Donuts, and Curves.
The battle of the bulge is on between donut dunkers and calorie counters.
