Weight: 128
Stats: 34-25-32

Don’t let the good looks fool you, this beauty has been working hard on an education that she hopes will lead to a career in the music industry.
Maritza already had a degree in business administration from LaGuardia Community College, and she currently attends Queens College, where she is majoring in Media Studies.
She said she loves listening to all types of music, but what really drew her to the music business was the people. As a model, she’s been able to attend several promotional events where artists and producers mingle, and the glamorous allure of that scene has made her want to work in the industry.
Maritza just got into the modeling game, but she has been getting a lot of positive feedback and hopes to branch out in the near future. Even when she breaks into music, she still wants to keep a toe in modeling and acting.
But it’s not all about parties and photo shoots, especially with a 2-year old daughter.
“When I feel like it, I have my moment when I like to party,” she said. “But as a mother, sometimes there will be several weeks in a row where I won’t go out at all.”
When she’s not working or studying, Maritza likes to travel and sample new restaurants. Her favorite spot in Queens is Tierra Columbia, on Roosevelt Avenue, where the portions are big and tasty.
She recently just got back from the Bahamas, where she rode a moped around the island. “It was fun, but a little different,” she said.

| Sarandon’s Politics
|
| Political activists Jackson Heights born Susan Sarandon and hubby Tim Robbins.
|
One little complaint, okay maybe two or three, about the U.S. invading Iraq before the war’s start in 2003, typically goes forgotten over time, right? Yeah, they usually get lost in the shouts, but not when you’re Susan Sarandon.
The Jackson Heights native is still catching flack for the comments she made against the war, she told the Chicago Tribune (no relation to your favorite Queens paper) in late October.
Recently, the 59- year-old actress was enjoying dinner at a restaurant in Greenwich Village, but when she finished her meal and walked out the restaurant doors the good time ended. She was bombarded by screams of, “Hey, Susan, you’re a terrible American. We hate you. You should die,” from a car full of young guys.
All Sarandon did was exercise her freedom of speech with a small minority arguing against a U.S. invasion of Iraq, and even with Bush’s approval ratings slipping the actress and life partner Tim Robbins are still hearing it.

Drama Over 50 Cent
|
| 50 Cent promo poster for his new movie shows him holding a baby with a gun in the rear of his pants.
|
The promotion of 50 Cent’s upcoming movie “Get Rich Or Die Tryin” has struck controversy with activists who are demanding that the billboards advertising the movie be removed because they glorify violence.
Posted in LA where his movie is set to premier in November, they depict 50 holding a mic in one hand and a gun in the other.
Posters that have hit the streets show 50 holding a newborn babe in one hand and gun stuck in the back of his pants waist.
“Get Rich or Die Tryin” is based on the life of 50 Cent. He stars as a drug dealer who turns away from crime to pursue a career in rap music.

Stick To Dry Land
Several weeks ago, the Tribune did a front page story on a couple that had driven the husband’s taxi all the way from New Orleans to Jackson Heights after Hurricane Katrina. It seems the family will be moving again, but one would never guess their choice.
Word has it that the family’s story, which received some national attention, reached a friend in Hawaii. The couple and their daughter could take up residence there in the near future.
In case anyone’s not aware, Hawaii consists of several small islands completely isolated in the middle of the Pacific—that’s a lot of water.
One might think the family, given their experience, would want to stay landlocked for a while, but that’s up to them. Anyway, Hawaii isn’t such a bad place to live.
Considering the weather we’ve had in New York recently, who can blame them for wanting to get a little sun?

Surprise!! (sort of)
|
| Peter "The Animal" Vallone, Jr. is tamed by a group of thankful kids from PS 122.
|
Being a City Councilman is sometimes a thankless job. But sometimes, you get more thanks than you were expecting.
Peter Vallone Jr. helped save an after school program at PS 122 by securing funds during city budget negotiations.
To show their appreciation, school administrators planned with Vallone’s staff (those sneaky buggers) to have about 80 students hide in Vallone’s office and throw a surprise celebration.
The plan was simple: Lure Vallone out of the office on false pretenses, bring in the students, and then have them jump out and shock the Councilman when he returned.
But a problem arose when over 200 kids showed up to thank Vallone, many more than could fit in his office.
Instead, Vallone’s staff told him a handful of students were downstairs and wanted to take their picture with him. When Vallone walked out the door, the sidewalk was packed with enthusiastic kids running to hug him in gratitude.
As the smile on his face implies, sometimes the hassles of politicking and campaigning are worth it.

A Great Beginning
|
| Felix Heredia
|
New York Mets relief pitcher Felix Heredia was suspended 10 days this past week for violating Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
The office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced that the suspension will begin at the start of the 2006 regular season. The Amazins are Heredia’s sixth team, and his career record is 28-19 with six saves and a 4.42 ERA in 511 games. He appeared in three games out of the bullpen for the Mets in 2005, giving up no earned runs in 2 2/3 innings.
Perhaps they busted the wrong pitcher.

Toomer A Smith Fan
|
| Kneeling NY Giant Amani Toomer gets the autograph of State Senator Malcolm Smith.
|
During his visit to Middle School 198 in Ozone Park to announce a $65,000 funding project for a future playground, New York Giants receiver Amani Toomer took time to participate in games with the children and sign a number of autographs.
From what it looks like though, the “Toominator,” as Newsday labeled him after his heroic recent game-winning catch against the Denver Broncos, received an autograph of his own from a spiffy New York State Senator. Sure Malcolm Smith may not have the fleet of foot upon NFL turf like Toomer, but it shouldn’t surprise anyone if the Smithinator’s smooth demeanor and distinction around the community has made a fan out of Toomer.
