84 Pounds Of Dynamite

Jarah Gibson
Home: Fresh Meadows
Age: 13
Height: 5’ 1"
Weight: 84 lbs.

Jarah has been modeling since she was 10 years old. She did her first print job advertising for Lana Gymnastics School in 1999. “I decided I wanted to go to modeling school and my mom enrolled me at Barbizon,” she said.

She has done fashion shows for FIT and modeled at the New Yorker Hotel. Jarah is the reigning Miss Rush Temple and is currently a contestant in the Miss Junior Teen America Beauty Pageant where she is representing the state of New York.

“I like everything about it. Modeling is fun,” she said.

When Jarah is not modeling she is in school or at the Y, or at the Dance and Drama School in Fresh Meadows.

She likes hanging out at Green Acres Mall and enjoys going to the movies. “I like the people in Queens because we are all so different,” she told us.

Her hobbies are singing, dancing, poetry writing, swimming. She is a cheerleader and also choreographs for her dance group and boasts a green belt in martial arts and is also a level five gymnast.

Jarah said she has learned a lesson early in her modeling career about how to handle mishaps on stage.

“I was walking down the runway and my heel broke,” she said. “I stopped and went backstage but I’ve learnt that I just need to keep going with the broken heel down the runway.”

Jarah is interested in doing catalog modeling, commercials, acting, videos, script reading and movies. She dreams of becoming a singer, dancer or fashion designer and “wouldn’t mind making modeling a full time job.”

Acting might very well be in this young model’s future who says “I can cry on cue and I’m a quick thinker.”

What A Shmulick

This contracting company truck parked in front of a house in Kew Gardens Hills caught our eye last week with its strange name, Shmulick Contracting, and its great slogan: “If you can pronounce it, we can do business!” These guys must be good; they wouldn't want their customers to mispronounce their name.

Times They Are A Changin’

It’s official- the New York Times is bringing the shop back home… where it belongs. Okay, well it’s not like they’re going to be printing out all the news that’s fit to print here in Queens, tomorrow. But by 2008, the presses will be running at full speed in New York, right here in College Point.

The Times announced recently it will close its Edison, N.J. plant in two years and consolidate its production end in Queens. Sure, some 250 Jersey production guys will lose their jobs. But come on, the Times will be in our backyard in a newer, bigger College Point plant – and bring jobs and business here.

The Times said consolidation of printing will save an estimated $30 million a year, and indicated another $12 million in savings is expected by reducing the size of the paper by 5 percent, in a day and age where more and more people have chosen to get their news from the Internet.

Smart Dogs

Recently separated couple Queens hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and Kimora Lee are still actively engaged in causes of their concern, but this time the couple has gone to the dogs so to speak.

Russell and Kimora, who split after seven years of marriage, are busy raising awareness about the dangers of leaving pets chained outside.

Model-turned-designer Kimora has donated $20,000 to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) while Phat Pharm creator Russell has made a public service ad to warn people about the dangers of leaving their dogs tied up alone.

Off The Wall

Serena up against the wall

Serena Williams is really up against the wall with her tennis playing and recent war of words with Douglaston native John McEnroe. “It’s a shame that Serena’s priority seems to have been to design clothes and act rather than play tennis,” Bad boy McEnroe said. “

We’ll see if it’s her gear or her game that brings her the most attention when she comes to Flushing Meadows for the U.S. Open at the end of the month.

Jose Who?

Jose Reyes has become a well-known name in New York, not unlike his teammate David Wright, battling for dominance in the often-vicious battle of hardball heroes in the hearts of New Yorkers with the likes of crosstown rivals Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez

So it filled many a Mets fans’ hearts with joy last to learn that their beloved shortstop has signed a four-year, $23.25 million contract, guaranteeing that he will be with the Mets until at least the ripe old age of 27.

The Mets, apparently, couldn’t wait long enough to put out their news release on the new talk of the town. They didn’t stop to check one key piece of the news release. The shortstop, after all, does have two syllables in his name, and the subject line in the Mets e-mail reads “Jose Reys.”

At least when the Mets signed their third baseman to a six-year deal they spelled his name Wright.

Soak Your Head

During last week’s heat wave, even Queens Tribune reporters had to do what they could to keep cool. Here, QConf contributor Jeff Feinman takes a dip into a fountain in the Albert Mauro playground near Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
