The News Of Our Pols Just Keeps Getting Worse --

It’s just sad. It was my intention to write about the fine work of the Borough President and her senior staff in preparing the coming year’s budget priorities and in their ongoing work in dealing with the reality of the present financial conditions. It was their proposal last year that the City tax aviation fuel which is now in the Mayors budget with an estimated new revenue of some $169 million.

(April 1, 2010) No, this is not an April Fool’s column. It is as serious as I usually am when I talk about New York State government.
I’ve been watching the jokers in Albany for so long that perhaps I’m beginning to think like them. It’s like this: the Dems in control – my party – have started focusing on a series of “revenuers” to fix what’s broken in the budget.

I’m not the father . . . but I raised the kid. The father, Gary Ackerman, gave birth to the Tribune 40 years ago – yes, the Congressman is a multi talented guy – he even sued the NYC Board of Education for a Paternity leave while birthing the Trib; but that’s a story for another time – it’s true, remember to ask me.

It’s a stream of consciousness flowing through a sewer. New York State politics continues to wallow in the muck.
The scandalously secretive process of three-men-in-a-room selection of AEG as the group to run the gazillion dollar video lottery terminal racino fell apart when the State Lottery Commission denied licensing because of unsavory members of the AEG combine.

The trials and tribulations of Governor David Paterson have so dominated the NY State political scene that little else remains.
The budget clock is ticking; the huge budget deficit is growing daily; and the financial crises sit on the back burner while the “accidental governor” makes the rounds to preserve the remainder of the Spitzer term in office for himself.
The distraction meter is out of control.

It’s never dull when you write about politics in New York. And I’ve used many words in many columns on the accidental governor. I think the column of my friend and colleague Henry Stern below, serves as this paper’s commentary on the Paterson affair, with one addition.

Hiram Monserrate’s expulsion – that’s an ugly word – from the State Senate was upheld by Federal Judge William Pauley. Gosh, can you imagine how evil one has to be so as not to be fit to serve in the most maligned elective house in the nation?

William James wrote of “The Varieties of Religious Experience” in 1902, long before the movement now known as ‘neo-paganism' came into its own.
