Fire Kills Two Bayside Residents

By Lisa Fogarty

Two Bayside residents, Ho Kim Yong, 52, and He Kim Sun, 45, were killed in a fire Wednesday morning that ripped through their second floor co-op apartment at 61-37 223rd Pl. in Oakland Gardens, police said.

At around 6:30 a.m., local firefighters and police from the 111th Precinct responded to a call about a large explosion and residential fire at the apartment complex. Upon extinguishing the fire, the bodies of two people were discovered unconscious and unresponsive inside the location, police said.

EMS then responded to the scene and pronounced the victims dead upon arrival. An investigation is ongoing and the medical examiner has not yet determined the cause of death.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to the Kim family for their loss and to the families who have been displaced,” Councilman David Weprin (D-Hollis) said. “It is my understanding that the fire is considered suspicious and will be fully investigated. If the investigation yields the cause as criminal in nature, I hope that the individual(s) responsible are caught and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

Councilman Tony Avella (D-Bayside) also weighed in with his concerns, saying he hopes the recent ejection of the department’s Fire Marshall, due to budgetary constraints, wouldn’t interfere with the investigation.
