Plans for the relocation of Willets Point businesses have been released by the Economic Development Corporation, as it announced plans to shift five companies to the College Point Corporate Park at a meeting with Community Board 7 last Tuesday.
Feinstein Ironworks, T. Milna Building Supply Company, Sambucci Bros. Auto Salvage, Mets Metals and Flushing Towing would be relocated to the park, pending the public approval process.
According to an EDC spokesman, the land was chosen because it fit several criteria. Mainly, it is City-owned and the current allowed uses fit the character of their prospective businesses.
Still, Community Board 7 did not greet the announcement with open arms.
“We don’t have any plans or layouts, so it’s hard to know if it’ll get a ‘yes,’” said Chuck Apelian, the Board’s executive vice chairman.
The presentation offered by the EDC lacked site plans, the businesses’ existing locations and a plan to mitigate the impact of a move, he said, adding that meeting the business owners would be nice, too.
Some of the five companies slated for the move declined to comment, citing a tango between the City and community that is still ongoing.
The plan is currently undergoing the ULURP process, and will be thoroughly vetted by the Community Board, as well as the Borough President and City Council before being implemented. The EDC spokesman expected the whole process to take at least seven months.
