By Joseph Orovic
In celebration of the Chinese New Year, CowParade, the world’s largest public art event, will come to Flushing for the neighborhood’s annual Lunar New Year Parade and stay through the summer.
Three museum-edition life-size fiberglass cows were taken along the parade route on a float, flanked by performers. The event kicked off a two-month window in which Flushing artists will paint their own inspiration and art onto blank cows. Each one a blank canvas, the art process will be uniquely open to the public, as the artists will work in a studio in the Flushing Mall.
After their work is done, the cows will be dispersed among various arts institutions around Flushing, to be eventually auctioned off to benefit local cultural non-profit organizations.
Cow parade has traveled to 66 cities on six continents since its inception a decade ago. This stop represents its first visit to Queens.
