A man was arrested after allegedly shooting two police officers on Tuesday at the Queens-Bridge subway station in Long Island City.
Raul Nunez, 32, a native of the Dominican Republic, was charged with attempted murder, robbery, criminal use of a firearm and assault on a police officer after he allegedly shot two plain clothes officers during a scuffle on the subway platform.
Officers Shane Farina and Jason Maas were shot while placing Nunez under arrest for illegally entering the station.
Police officials said Nunez was approached by the officers after illegally using a student Metrocard to enter the subway station and resisted when they attempted to arrest him. All three men fell to the floor during the struggle and Nunez allegedly shot both officers after one of their guns came lose.
Nunez was apprehended by police seconds later while attempting to flee the scene of the shooting. He was shot four times and placed under arrest after exchanging fire with the station’s police supervisor while attempting to leave the terminal, police officials said.
Police said Nunez may have fired additional rounds at the wounded officers while running up the escalator.
Nunez was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he allegedly implicated himself in the shootings.
Farina and Maas were taken to Elmhurst Hospital where they were listed in stable condition. Both officers were wearing bulletproof vests.
If convicted, Nunez faces up to 25 years in prison.
