Fugitive Convicted In 2001 Murder

Queens DA Richard Brown

A Jackson Heights resident was convicted of murder on Tuesday in the 2001 slaying of Edgar Garzon after fleeing to London for 5 years.

John Love McGhee, 40, was found guilty of second-degree murder after hitting Garzon in an attempted robbery in August 2001, fracturing his skull and later killing him.

“Without provocation, the defendant ran up to the victim and brutally assaulted him before trying to rob him. He then ran off, leaving the victim laying on the ground, unconscious and bleeding. It was an ugly and brutal act of savagery that will now result in the defendant serving what will probably be the rest of his life behind bars,” Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.

Garzon lapsed into a coma before dying three weeks later.

McGhee was arrested at John F. Kennedy Airport in June 2006 following a flight from London, prosecutors said, after reportedly being told to leave England for lying on his citizenship application.

McGhee faces 25 years to life in prison when he is sentenced on Sept. 29.
