In Tuesday’s Democratic Primary, State Sen. Shirley Huntley (D-Jamaica) trounced her rival, former councilman Allan Jennings by more than 4,000 votes.
In her primary win of the Democratic nomination in the 10th Senatorial District, Huntley garnered 7,351 votes to Jennings 3,155.
“They wanted to come out and vote for me,” Huntley said of the thousands who cast their votes in her favor. She added that her campaign strategy remained the same.
“We sent out literature,” she said.
Throughout the campaign season, Huntley was positive that her first term would not be her last.
“I was so confident,” she said. “There are very few times in my life I can remember being nervous.”
Her opponent, Jennings lost his council seat to Councilman Tom White (D-South Ozone Park), for the 28th Council District on a trail of controversy. Jennings was censured, fined and accused of sexual harassment by two female subordinates and had his wages garnished by the New York City Council.
Although he left office with a tarnished name, Jennings’s office garnered the reputation of being highly responsive to his constituents. Responses to a complaint were answered with a phone call or personal visit within two days.
As of press time, Jennings couldn’t be reached for comment.
At her celebratory event at the Guy R. Brewer Democratic Club Huntley showed no fear. The mood was festive. She said members of the Delfonics, a soul group, sang to a crowd of about 400.
“It was fantastic,” she said. “What a party.”
With her celebration in full swing and feeling good after her win, Huntley said there was much to be done.
“I’ll continue to work hard like I’ve been doing,” she said. “I’ve got a lot of different projects going.”
Even though she has yet to finish her first term and just won the nomination for a second a term, Huntley is looking to a third term.
“As long as I can breathe I’ll be running,” she said.
