Candidates Battle For Senate Seat
By SASHA AUSTRIE
State Sen. Shirley Huntley (D-Jamaica) is gearing up to face former councilman Allan Jennings for the 10th Senatorial District seat in the Democratic Primary on Sept. 9.
Huntley who is nearing the completion of her first term in office welcomes the challenge from the embattled Jennings.
“I don’t feel I’m up against a tough candidate,” Huntley said. She added that all she has seen from Jennings is literature concerning schools.
Although Jennings was endorsed by District Council 37, New York’s largest municipal public employee union, Huntley expects to emerge victorious.
“I’m very confident,” Huntley said. “Nobody has seen him and people are really turned off by him.”
Jennings was defeated by Councilman Tom White (D-South Ozone Park), for the 28th Council District seat after he was censured, fined accused of sexual harassment by two female subordinates and had his wages garnished.
Although Jennings lost his position on a trail of controversy, his office garnered the reputation of being highly responsive to his constituents. Responses to a complaint were answered with a phone call or personal visit within two days, Jennings claimed.
As of press time, Jennings couldn’t be reached for comment.
