Katz Has Baby Boy

By Juliet Werner

When the first in-vitro fertilization procedure didn’t take, Councilwoman Melinda Katz (D-Forest Hills) tried again. And when doctors told her an early caesarean section would be necessary, Katz put her head to the pillow and underwent the surgery without hesitation.

Determination and bravery paid off, and early Saturday morning, Katz gave birth to a 4 pound 10 ounce boy.
“It was earlier than expected,” Katz’s spokesman James McClelland said, adding that doctors, “felt it was the best time for mom and baby to reduce long term health risks.”
The surgery went smoothly and the baby was born with all his organs fully formed and healthy. Sources said the baby’s face isn’t half bad either.

“[Katz] thinks it’s the most handsome boy on the face of the planet,” McClelland said, adding, “All the doctors are happy with the progress of baby and mom.”

As the Katz continue to recover at New York Presbyterian Hospital, the Councilwoman’s staff is staying busy opening cards, answering calls and organizing gifts.

“She was BlackBerrying us about an hour after the operation,” McClelland said. “She doesn’t miss a beat. It’s like she’s at an extended meeting.”

Katz’s son, dubbed “Baby Katz,” will be formally named at his briss, the Jewish rite of circumcision. A briss is traditionally performed on the eighth day of a male child’s life, but Baby Katz’s has been postponed until early June in order to avoid infection.
