Bury The Gun In Ceremony
By SASHA AUSTRIE
On Saturday, Aug. 25, Liz Bishop-Goldsmith, the president of Mother’s Against Guns, will borrow a page from Councilman Leroy Comrie’s playbook and preside over a funeral ceremony – and she wants you there.
At the funeral, Bishop-Goldsmith will bury a symbol of violence that has plagued communities across the United States for decades. The symbol that will represent the onslaught of gun violence plaguing the country is a coffin. The funeral service will take place at the Queens Criminal Court at 120-01 Queens Blvd. Kew Gardens from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
“Every day it is more of the same: gun violence, gun violence, gun violence. We are sick, tired and downright outraged about this public health epidemic that’s claiming the lives of our loved ones,” Bishop-Goldsmith said. “Enough is enough!”
Comrie (D-St. Albans) attended a Texas funeral for the “N-Word,” where the offensive term was laid to rest. Earlier in the year Comrie introduced and had passed a piece of legislation imposing a moratorium on the use of the “N-Word.”
To make the funeral a memorable occasion, Bishop-Goldsmith, who lost two godsons to gun violence, is asking participants to wear red to signify the blood shed and the pain experienced by those who have lost loved ones. She is also requesting that youth come forward and mark this occasion with their presence.
“We all know the crippling impact gun violence has on the lives of those who have lost loved ones, and it is because of this we ask you to help us stop this madness,” Bishop-Goldsmith said. “Symbolic to burying loved ones, we believe this will be a strong deterrent to our youth, and those with criminal intent to put down their guns – legal or illegal.
