Zoning Queens
By Jeff Feinman
The Dept. of City Planning has 14 Queens neighborhoods under zoning review, including pieces of Fresh Meadows, Long Island City, Flushing Willets Point, and Jamaica, said Dept. of City Planning’s Queens Office Director John Young.
“These areas have colonial histories and have carried those functions throughout the years,” Young said. “We have an opportunity to diversify those histories and strengthen these business districts.”
CB 7 has “serious congestion issues,” especially in downtown Flushing. City projects will work to improve transportation and traffic conditions, widen sidewalks and implement streetscapes around the Flushing Area.
A proposal to rezone the area along the JFK AirTrain would allow for major development in surrounding Jamaica, he said. Existing zoning does not anticipate for future development and does not attract new investment opportunities, Young said. A C-6 zoning for the area around the AirTrain, which has very loose restrictions, is recommended.
