Historical Group Seeks Treasures For Exhibit
By JEFF FEINMAN
Wanting to preserve pieces of local history, Community Boards around the borough are seeking artifacts that represent and identify Queens. Each board has appointed an historian that was given the task of collecting items from the different regions of the borough. The artifacts collected will be put into an exhibit at the New York State Museum.
“We’re looking for items that reflect the history of Queens,” said Queens Historical Society President Stanley Kogan. “It will make a splendid exhibit.”
The QHS is seeking artifacts that are special to Queens and its residents. Whether it is an old newspaper or a photograph from days gone by, all items will be considered for preservation. Other things that QHS members suggest include old diplomas and documents, or belongings from past decades that are no longer in use or on the market. Residents will have the items returned to them after copies are made for the museum exhibit.
“There are a lot of people who have lived here all their lives,” said CB 10 member Joy Patron, who serves as her community board’s historian. “One woman from Bayside gave some photos of beautiful churches that aren’t around anymore.”
As a part of the southern Queens community, Patron suggested that one local artifact good for submission is memorabilia from the Aqueduct Racetrack. She said that some of the items that have already been submitted include different packaging materials from factories that have been shut down for many years.
Those interested in submitting artifacts can contact the QHS at (718) 224-9592.
