City To Breathe Life Into 1939 Boathouse

By Michael Rehak

Dining at the Boathouse in Flushing Meadows Corona Park might soon become reality again now that the city is accepting proposals for prospective tenants looking to resurrect the 1939 World’s Fair dining facility.

The Department of Parks and Recreation has already begun accepting proposals to reconstruct the Boathouse, which up until the 1980s was used as a seasonal restaurant. At that time, the property was leased to a concessionaire, who was required to repair the facility and begin operation, but that never happened and the restaurant never opened.

According to the Parks Department, “This concession opportunity now consists of the boathouse, as well as the adjacent storage facility and a boathouse dock.”

What the city is looking for are bidders who will be able to operate and maintain a full service restaurant and banquet hall that overlooks Meadow Lake. In addition, the site will also include a boat dock in front of the restaurant, a storage facility and bicycle and boat rentals.

Space for the restaurant property will be limited to 15,000 square feet. Interested bidders have been asked to offer a sample menu as part of the proposal.

“The food and service provided must be of high quality yet affordable,” the bid sheet reads. But the common folks aren’t left out entirely. In addition, some low-cost items should be provided, the RFP reads, and alcohol will only be allowed during sit-down service and must be consumed on the premises.

Submitted bid proposals are due Dec. 2 at 3 p.m. and inquiries can be directed to Project Manager Slater Gray at (212) 360-3434.
