Driver Fled U.S.: Cops

By LIZ GOFF

The lead suspect in a hit-run crash that killed a 15-year-old Ozone Park boy on his way to school Oct. 26 fled the country and is believed to be hiding in the Dominican Republic, police sources said.

The family of Jeffrey Javier made the heart-wrenching decision last weekend to pull the plug on the brain-dead boy, after doctors informed them he would not recover from injuries he suffered when he was struck by an irate parent who had just dropped his own child off at John Adams High School, police sources said.

Sources said investigators have the license plate of the gray Chevrolet Corsica that plowed into Javier at about 8 a.m. as he crossed Rockaway Boulevard at 101st Avenue.

Eyewitnesses told police the driver slammed into the teen, stopped the car after the impact – then backed up into Javier, running him over a second time before speeding away, the sources said.

Police contacted the 48-year-old driver, a Dominican national who admitted he was at the scene of the hit-run – but who denied he was the driver who hit Javier, sources said.

The suspect agreed to meet with police on the day after their conversation, but never showed up at the precinct, police said. Cops said the man has two prior drug arrests.

Sources said investigators believe the man was driving his daughter’s car at the time of the incident, and they are “anxious to question him,” the sources said.

Henry Javier pleaded this week for the suspect to turn himself in to police. Javier, who was preparing a memorial service for the teen, said, “Nothing can bring my son back, but I need to find some peace.

“Please turn yourself in,” Javier said. “You can’t just take my son’s life and walk away.”

Police are asking anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspect to call the CRIMESTOPPERS Hotline at (800) 577-TIPS. The Hotline is offering a $2,000 reward to anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.
