Remembering A Tragedy: Celebration & Reflection Sept. 11 Events Planned Throughout Queens
Reflecting Through Song
On Saturday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m., gather together on the eve of Sept. 11 to celebrate freedom; and remember and reflect through song and poetry at The Undercroft Coffeehouse, a performance space of Long Island City, located in Trinity Lutheran Church at 31-18 37th St.
The event will feature live Folk-Country-Rock music with Home Cookin’ band members Martha Nelson, Tony Santoro & Kevin Ward. Home Cookin’ was recently featured in the Queens Tribune and the Undercroft Performance Space is excited to be featuring this talented band.
The event will also include an Open Mic segment for poets and other performers co-hosted by Powell Leonard and Ella Smith of lionheartedplayers.com. Coffeehouse cook Joyce Rivera will once again serve her Famous Hot Chicken Wings. Suggested donation for the event is: $5. Expressing Gratitude
At the Friday evening, Sept. 9, Sabbath eve service, Temple Beth Sholom has invited representatives of local Police Precincts and Fire Companies along with representatives of the Lakeville-Manhasset Fire Department and Troop 1 of the Boys Scouts of America, to honor them in commemoration of the Fourth Anniversary of the attacks on America on Sept. 11, 2001.
The congregation will honor and express gratitude to our uniformed public servants at both the religious service and the collation following. The service begins at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Beth Sholom, Northern Blvd at 172nd Street.
Concert & Speakers
The Rego Park fourth anniversary of Sept. 11 commemoration, featuring Councilwoman Melinda Katz, Opera Singer Buma Sandler and more, will be held Sunday, Sept. 11; from 1 pm. To 4 p.m. at the Rego Park Jewish Council, 97-30 Queens Blvd.
The event is presented by The Workmen’s Circle/Arbeter Ring and The Queens Jewish Community Council.
Join them for a moving commemoration of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks featuring fascinating speakers and an “International Victory Concert” performed by renowned opera singer Buma Sandler. Cynthia Zalisky, executive director of the Queens Jewish Community Council, will join Katz and the Memorial Service will be led by Rami Shlomo Nissanov, President of the Vaad Harabonim (Council of Rabbis) of Queens.
Sandler will sing classical songs from countries that have been affected by terrorism and violence in languages including Hebrew, Yiddish, Russian, Bukharian, Spanish, Italian and others. Following the concert coffee and cake will be served.

Memorial Concert
On Sunday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 p.m., The Astoria Symphony performs Beethoven’s extraordinary Choral Fantasy, plus moving masterworks by New York Composers B. Allen Schulz, Gadi Kaplan, and Aaron Copland. The concert will take place at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 43-19 30th Ave.

Post 9/11 Reflection
Queens Library invites everyone to welcome back Sunday service at the Central Library, Flushing Library and Jackson Heights Branch. Those three library locations will resume seven-day-a-week service beginning Sunday, Sept. 11 and will continue through June 2006. (The Kew Gardens Hills Branch and the Richmond Hills Branch have service on Sunday all year.) Special programs are scheduled throughout the day. Admission is free.
The centerpiece will be “Reflections, Remembrance and Renewal, A Celebration of our Resiliency in Commemoration of 9/11.” It will feature the finest multi-cultural performers in Queens volunteering their talents in a live, marathon celebration for the future. Reflections, Remembrance and Renewal will take place at three library locations simultaneously.
