Play Ball

This week we took a break from the ever deepening and troubled seas of New York politics to pay tribute to Queens’ coliseum.

William A. Shea Municipal Stadium, better known as Shea Stadium, opened April 17, 1964 and more than four decades later is one of the oldest ballparks in the country with a legacy steeped in New York and American history.

There have been four world series played at Shea. Broadway Joe Namath took center stage at Shea with the Jets as well as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Pope John Paul II.
The last scheduled game at Shea will be played Sept. 28 against the Florida Marlins, at which point, it will be time to move on next door to Citi Field. The blue façade will be brought down but the memories cannot be removed from Queens’ consciousness.

If you haven’t been to a game at Shea, this is your last chance, and if you’ve been, go for the nostalgia.
See ya there!
