Still Beating
Hospitals & Health Centers

New York hospital queens is undergoing a massive expansion project.

With the debate over hospital beds in Queens still ongoing, and possible closures threatening several facilities in the borough, there has never been a more tumultuous time for healthcare in Queens.

However, there are still a number of very valuable and highly rated hospitals, health centers and clinics open to serve the residents of Queens. Everything from Alzheimer’s Day Care to AIDS and Cancer clinics help Queens County to cope with any possible ailment.

The New York State Health Dept. publishes a comprehensive list of hospitals, both by location and by services offered, with in-depth information. All this is available at their Web site: http://hospitals.nyheatlh.gov.

Staying Warm This Winter

The borough has been braving some of the coldest temperatures and most piercing winds in a decade this winter.

There are some ways, fortunately, that residents can get help from the city.

The Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) can be reached at 311.
City law requires that landlords keep interior temperatures in their residential properties at 68 degrees Fahrenheit or greater between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. when the outdoor temperature falls below 55 degrees. Interior temperatures must be at 55 degrees or greater between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. when the outside temperature falls below 40 degrees.
If a property owner is in violation of the code, HPD will try to get him to resolve the problem. If 48 hours pass before the heat is up to legal levels, the HPD will issue a violation to the property owner. The agency will also, under its Emergency Repair Program, use in-house staff and private contractors to make the necessary repairs, which the property owner will have to pay for.

Low-income seniors who have heat but need help paying their gas and electric bills may be eligible for a Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) grant. Contact the Department for the Aging at 311 for more information.

For heat violations in commercial properties, employees can call the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s area director in Bayside, at (718) 279-9060.

Health And Schools
The city’s website www.nyc.gov is a frequently-updated resource for public health and school information, including immunization requirements.

In January 2003 Mayor Michael Bloomberg created the office of Youth Development and School-Community Services, a new partnership between the Department of Education and Department and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) that’s designed to focus on nutrition, mental health, physical education, sexual and reproductive health and substance abuse.

The partnership ensures better health for students by making school and health officials work more closely.

For complete information on immunization requirements, visit the DOHMH website at www.nyc.gov.

Queens students can get free immunizations through the DOHMH’s Vaccines for Children program. For more information, call (212) 676-2296 or (800) 325-CHILD.

For more general information about school health, visit www.nyc.gov or call the DOHMH’s School Health Program at (212) 676-2500.
