Best Food
Yikes; where do we start with this one?
As anybody what they like about Queens, and when you get past the answers of diversity, the Mets or their parents, they rave about the food. Where else can you get samosas, sushi, sangria, sauerbraten and a slice of pizza all on the same block?
The diversity of this borough is shown not only through its varied cuisine, but also through those who experiment, learning about foods they consider foreign, and opening up doors to whole new gastronomic wonders.

A Whopper Of A Tale
Burger King
39-20 Main St. at Roosevelt Avenue
The management and staff at this fast food hamburger heaven are, as always, professional, friendly, courteous and attentive to their dining customers’ needs. The service is always excellent, there are a great many selections of meals to choose from and this restaurant offers comparably the best prices around.
The food is always cooked right, served hot, fresh, healthy, nutritious and delicious – great to munch on. No KFC rats here, an atypical clean restaurant establishment. The restroom is always clean and open to the public. There are free refills and action toys on sale for children. A unique shelf/lighting arrangement of wall and ceiling décor highlight Main Street’s Burger King. The spacious interior design includes a second floor dining room with a “historic look back” at the Flushing community.
A model of the Unisphere stands tall at this Burger King, bringing back memories of the 1964 World’s Fair. There are other World’s Fair photographic memorabilia and a row of flags of different international nations, highlighting and complementing the restaurant lobby.
The food and menu selections speak for themselves, as they are widely varied and reasonably priced with opportunities for discounts. The ability to choose from a large selection of items, from milkshakes, burgers and salads to chicken and fish sandwiches to breakfast food and dollar menu options has made BK a “best loved” on everyone’s list.
The best deal in America — our “Fast Food Nation” — is beautifully represented by my favorite place in Queens: the Main Street BK.

Druery pours mixture of yellow & brown mustard seeds into vintage machinery.

A Rich Tradition
A. Bauers Mustard
Ridgewood
Bart J. Druery IV knows the ups and downs of family business. In 1990 he left his “shirt and tie” job to take over A. Bauer’s Mustard from his great uncle. The Ridgewood company, established in 1888, hasn’t altered its recipe or its equipment; the newest machine is 30 years old.
“It’s not like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” Druery said, climbing the crooked stairs of the 19th century factory, which houses New York State’s fourth oldest elevator. Hanging on his office wall is a certificate from the 1931 Parisian Fancy Food Exposition where the condiment took home gold.
As A. Bauer’s sole employee, Druery manufactures the mustard himself—the ratio of yellow to brown seeds is a secret. He also labels, fills and shi
ps the jars. He’s determined to reverse years of mismanagement under his great uncle.
“Years ago the super markets were knocking on the door,” he said. “We’d have been as big as Guldens.” The events following Sept. 11 further slowed business with army bases closing and canceling their orders.
Druery markets his Pure Prepared Mustard and Mustard with Horseradish by handing out jars to everyone he meets. And in the last 10 years, Fiery-Foods & Barbeque Magazine and Food Distribution Magazine have recognized A. Bauer’s excellence.
“I’m not looking for the fame,” Druery said. “But the fortune would be nice.” It’s also nice, he says, to meet the 60, 70 and 80 year-olds who stop by to share memories of buying jars as children.
