Did you ever wonder where the best schools are in Queens? How about the shortest streets, the oldest houses, the most profitable companies or the other pieces of odd trivia that lurk in obscurity within the borders of our borough? Well, we’ve done extensive research, tracked down a few official-sounding studies, hiked along the narrow pathways that link our neighborhoods and peeked inside the corridors of learning to find the most, the best, the brightest, the oldest, the longest and every other “est” that we could think of that helps identify Queens and its inhabitants. As you read through our lists, we hope you learn something new about this borough that we all love. After all, life is filled with weird, trivial facts – we just figured we’d give you a place to see them all together.

Like moths to a lamp we are drawn to it – we cannot escape its powerful allure. The Unisphere, which has sat in front of the 1939 New York World’s Fair New York Building since 1964, was created as a symbol of Queens – it shows our strength with its steel, our diversity with its geography, our industry with its innovation and our spirit with its timeless beauty. As we scanned through our lists – which we thought at first could be cold and data-driven, yet in the end turned out to be full of life and intrigue – we noticed that this icon of Queens was simply not given the attention it deserves. Like any other great art, poetry or music, the Unisphere’s presence is immeasurable in words, but it carries great stature and importance. Our Unisphere is the often-unspoken mascot, charm and cheerleader for Queens. Its importance is incalculable, its symbolism staggering and its place at the top of any of our lists is reserved in perpetuity.
