Queens may have avoided most of the early days of pirates and plunderers setting sail across murky waters, stealing gold and burying it on uncharted islands, but that does not mean we are lacking secret treasures.
They are, in fact, scattered all across the borough. Most are hidden, though likely in plain sight. These iron horse heads at Peter Chahales Park in Maspeth, the stone frogs around Baisley Pond in Jamaica, the abandoned rail line that stretches across our southern boundary and the Corona plaque to the Argentine tango master are all out in public view – we just tend not to notice them.
Let this book be your map to find the hidden treasures that lay scattered throughout our borough. Some are relics of days gone by, some are remnants of a time that once was and others, still, are the remainders of another age that we still use every day.
Though many items in here fall into multiple categories, we’re sure that all of them will help create a smile, stir a fond memory or open our eyes to the wonders all around us.
