Tribune At Home
Every week the Queens Tribune brings the most important news of the borough to life with its award-winning writing and witty editorial style.
Of course, not everybody can get to the Trib boxes or find us as often as they would like. So it you want to ensure that your mom, your kids, your grandparents or whomever gets the Tribune every week, be sure to get them a subscription.
Of course, it being the holidays and all, we’re offering special holiday discounts. Check out our ad on Page 15, and send in your order today. Because when the holidays go away, so, too, will the discount.
Thanksgiving
This is a great day for family and the official beginning of the holiday season. Whether you want your potatoes mashed or sweet, your corn on the cob or on the plate, or your turkey white or dark, you will surely be treated to a wonderful meal on this joyous holiday.
Usually there is a great football game on and, of course, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.
U.S. tradition associates the holiday with a meal held in 1621 by the Wampanoag Indians and the Pilgrims who settled in Plymouth, Mass. Some of the details of the American Thanksgiving story are myths that developed in the 1890s and early 1900s as part of the effort to forge a common national identity in the aftermath of the Civil War and in the melting pot of new immigrants.
Toys for Tots
This noble program brings in as many toys as possible for those less fortunate. Toys for Tots began in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children.
Be a giver during the holidays and bring Christmas to a young one that otherwise may not have any such joy. This will be the program’s 58th year of the U.S. Marine Corps bringing toys to children.
Trees
Picking out where to get the Christmas tree is half the fun. Adventurous types will head up into the mountains with a handsaw to pick their own tree, while others just head over to a local farm or convenience store.
Perhaps we shouldn’t say, because it has been one of our favorite places, but did you know that Home Depot sells Christmas trees? Yup, they do. And they only cost $25. Yes, that is not a typo, $25. Now we don’t know what their prices will be this season, but starting at $25 for a six-footer, you can’t go wrong.
