Dreidel

Non Jews might even sing the song about the dreidel and how it was made out of clay, but this game that involves a simple top is played by Jewish kids all across the world during the Chanukah celebration.

With each of the four sides of the spinning toy representing a Hebrew symbol, players take turns and decide their fate on a jackpot that consists of anything from change to candy or gelt.

Land on the Hebrew symbol for the word Nun, and nothing happens. If it falls on the Gimel, the player takes the pot. When it lands on the Hey, he or she gets half the pot and if it lands on the Shin, a coin or piece of candy is added into the pot.

What the game represents is the rise and fall of the Jewish faith and during the Greek empire, when Jews were forbidden to gather and study the torah, if caught, they would pull out a dreidel and pretend they were gambling.

Dinner For Friends

Since eating alone is just no fun, getting together with friends to enjoy a meal can be considered one of the most popular leisure activities of all time.

Whether the meal is served at a fancy restaurant, McDonalds or on your dining room table, eating with friends has been recognized by all nationalities as a symbol for friendship.

If it’s a holiday, special occasion or just an excuse to collectively fill bellies, food and friendship go hand in hand and continues to be one of the most well known methods of getting together to celebrate just about anything.

Diwali

Referred to as “the festival of lights,” this ancient Hindu celebration is considered the biggest holiday in India, but unfortunately, it is one that is yet to be recognized by the city. This year, Mayor Mike Bloomberg vetoed lifting alternate side of the street parking regulations for the five day feast.

Diwali takes place in the last month of the Hindu calendar year, the end of October or early November, and is celebrated with homes decorated with candles, lamps and gifts. History tells us that Diwali is the day when King Rama’s coronation was celebrated in Ayodhya after an epic war with the demon king of Lanka, Ravana.
