The
need for food pantries continues to grow according
to the New York City
Coalition Against Hunger. 87 percent of food pantries
and soup kitchens in Queens reported a greater
demand for services in 2005. The Coalition Against
Hunger represents 1,200 feeding agencies in New
York City that serve over 1 million residents,
more than 400,000 of whom are children
according to the Coalition. The city's emergency
food programs estimated an 11 percent growth in
need from 2005 to 2006.
