The Best Of Queens Heroes
Of The Finest & Bravest

When he shall die, they will take him
and cut him into little stars
And he will make the face of heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun…

Shakespeare

The Queens Tribune honors our heroes of September 11, 2001.

For the scores of lives they saved by the sacrifice of their own, we honor their memories:

Queens “Finest”

P.O.
Moira Smith

Moira Smith: Police Officer Moira A. Smith, 38, was appointed to the Transit Police Department on July 11, 1988, and was assigned to Transit Districts 2, 4 and 30 before being transferred to the 13 Precinct in March 1996.

Prior to becoming a police officer, she worked in the travel industry. While working in Transit District 4, she met her husband, P.O. James Smith, who is currently assigned to the Police Academy. Besides being an avid sports fan, P.O. Smith and her husband loved to travel. A recent destination was Spain, where they ran with the bulls in 1995.

P.O. Smith is survived by her husband; daughter Patricia; and sister Mary.

P.O. Paul Talty

Paul Talty: Police Officer Paul Talty, 40, was appointed to the NYPD on August 30, 1993, and began his career in the 108 Precinct. He was assigned to ESU 10 in October 1999.

After graduating from high school, where he was a basketball and track star, P.O. Talty attended Queens College and earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology. He loved the outdoors, as well as working on his house where, as a skilled carpenter and electrician, he had recently embarked on a major construction project. Fellow ESU officers, who always considered him the command’s premiere handyman, have already started finishing what he began at home.

He is survived by his wife Barbara; children Paul, Lauren and Kelly; parents Gloria and John Sr., sisters Kerry and Patricia; and brothers Kevin, John, Mark and Steven.

P.O. Thomas Langone

Thomas Langone: Police Officer Thomas M. Langone, 39, was appointed to the NYPD on January 3, 1983, and began his career on patrol in Neighborhood Stabilization Unit 15. He served in the 45 and 103 Precincts before being assigned to ESU in July 1991.

A graduate of Nassau Community College, he held the rank of Second Assistant Chief with the Roslyn Rescue Fire Company, where he was also the department’s training officer. In addition, he served as the Second Deputy Chief Instructor at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy since 1993. Over the years he was honored for his work at the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the Oklahoma City bombing, and the crash of Avianca Flight 52.

He is survived by his wife JoAnn; children Caitlin and Brian; mother Sheila; and sisters Joann and Rosemarie. His brother Peter, a New York City firefighter assigned to Engine Co. 262, was also killed in the World Trade Center incident.

Local 3 IBEW
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers

We will remember them best, clad in jeans and tool belts – lighting our days and nights.

Seventeen members of Local 3 IBEW (Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) perished in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center.

They were our friends and neighbors in Queens, the best of the brightest. We offer this tribute in their memories.

“I have no ambition in this World but one, and that is to be a fireman. The position may, in the eyes of many, appear to be a lowly one, but we who know the work of firemen believe that this is a noble calling.”

“There is an old adage which says ‘Nothing can be destroyed except by fire.’ We strive to preserve from destruction the wealth of the world, which is the product of the industry of men... but above all, our proudest endeavor is to save lives of men, the work of God himself.”

“Under the impulse of such thoughts the nobility of the occupation thrills and stimulates us to deeds of daring, even at the supreme sacrifice. Such considerations may not strike the average mind, but they are sufficient to fill to the limit our ambition in life to serve human society.”

— Fireman’s Creed

Twenty-four of Queens Bravest perished in the Sept. 11 World Trade Center Attacks.

Nineteen of those men raced to the Twin Towers from the same Maspeth firehouse. Squad 288 and Queens Haz Mat suffered the greatest loss of any house in New York City.

For their eagerness to serve and their sacrifice, we celebrate the lives of the lost:

Memories

There is a light that shines from the streets of Queens, reaching up to the skies and into heaven. It shines on heroes of Sept. 11 – our moms and dads, spouses and siblings, each with a story to tell.

The Tribune is searching for those stories, to share the lives and dreams of our Queens heroes in a special Sept. 11 Commemorative Issue.

We are also searching for the stories of survivors – those who made it out of the Twin Towers – their recollections and how they are coping with the tragedy.

We invite the families, friends and comrades of those lost on Sept. 11, to submit their stories to: Queens Tribune, 174-15 Horace Harding Expwy., Fresh Meadows, NY 11365. Please include a photo (where possible) and submit by: September 5, 2002.

We hope you will share your memories with us, so we may continue to shine a light on the lives and times of our Queens heroes.
