LELA
PAULTRE, 8, OF BAYSIDE,
ON HER MOTHER DEBORAH PAULTRE
Before my mommy got sick with lupus, she was a teacher. She
taught kindergarten, first and second grade. She taught me to be kind, polite and
respectful. She reads to me and uses good expression. Sometimes, she uses a little old
ladies voice or Rapunzel's voice.
My mom gives me dancing lessons and sends me to science camp. Even when
she is sometimes very sick, she tries to help me with my homework.
My dad died in 1995, so my mom is like a mom and a dad to me.
My mom is a great cook. She makes the best pasta and chicken. She also
makes all my clothes. My mom also takes care of my fourteen year old brother by helping
him study for tests.
My mom is my best friend. I can share all my secrets with her. She
helps me with all my problems. When my mom is sick and I had to change schools, my mom and
my aunt found the best school in Queens for me.
Every morning, my mom gives me a big lipstick kiss on my cheek, so when I am at school
it's like she is there with me. I want my mom to be Mother of the Year. It will bring
happiness into her life. |

SAM SIEGER,
10, OF DOUGLASTON HILLS,
ON HIS MOTHER LISA SIEGER
My best friend is not at school but at home. That best friend is
my mom. We connect in many ways.
We do a lot of things together. We are everything a mother and son
should be. If I do something wrong and my mom gets angry, we find a way to resolve it.
My mom works but the money she earns is for the family. She's always
trying to make my family better.
At night when my dad puts my brother to sleep, my mom and I talk about
anything. That's what is so great about her.
There are so many words to describe my mom but then this story would never end. |

HARRIET
NOTOWITZ, ON HER
MOTHER RAE FELLER OF FLUSHING
My mom began her journey to America hidden beneath a blanket of a
straw in the back of a Russian farmer's wagon. Today, at age eighty-eight, she travels by
wheelchair, but she rides in it like a queen in her coach. "I am the richest woman in
the world, for I have four wonderful children," my mother would often say, causing
each of us to feel like a priceless jewel. My parents' solid marriage was the gold setting
that held us together and allowed each of us to sparkle.
In her younger days, my mom ran our temple's rummage sales. She would
set aside bags filled with children's clothing for one particular mother or another,
surprisingly knowing who could afford to pay a dollar more or just fifty cents. Our
friends never knew what surprises they would enjoy at our parties, from green mashed
potatoes to celebrate my brother's St. Patrick's Day birthday, to hotdog shaped hamburgers
to celebrate my summer one.
Later, when my mom's heart began to fail, the doctors ruled out surgery
at her age. Disgusted with frequent hospital visits, my mom insisted on a valve
replacement. To everyone's surprise, she awoke, wagged her finger at us, exclaimed,
"Hah! I made it!" and kissed the surgeon.
Who is this Wonder Woman of Moms? You can spot my mom by her beautiful crown of silver
hair and the trail of smiles she leaves behind her. She is Rae Feller, my wonderful,
much-loved mom. |
