We have been fans of Kostos,
Chef and Owner of Taverna Taverna, for a number of years. We can always
recommend this restaurant to any diner who wants to enjoy great Greek
cuisine and attentive service.
Start with the Pikilia
antipasto platter ($12) of Tzatziki (yogurt and garlic dip), Tazamosalada
(tangy spread of fish roe) Skordalia (potato and garlic dip) and
Melizanosalata (smoked mousse of roasted eggplant froth with onions,
parsley, garlic, olive oil and herbs). Our hot appetizer (and one of our
favorites) was Haloumi Saganaki, fried Cypriot goat cheese ($6).
A great Greek salad with lots
of feta cheese (anchovies optional), fresh made on the premises and a house
specialty, goes well with the appetizer as does a glass of the house white
wine.
For the entrée (as usual) we
left the selection to Kostos and his wife Maria. They suggested
Roumeliotikos Mezes, a mixed grill of marinated lamb chop, pork chop,
chicken breast and spicy Greek sausage. The Chef also has a fine treatment
of fish and we were served the day’s catch cooked to order.
The baby squid, calamari, is
always nice and tender as is the popular Souvlas/BBQ: Baby Lamb or Roasted
Suckling Pig (each at $14). You will enjoy any of the great food in this
relaxing, unhurried atmosphere.
Finish your meal with one of
the sweets with your coffee. Try the honey-laden Baklava with its nut
filling.
