Located within the bustling community of
Astoria, Syros Seafood Restaurant provides a Greek dining experience worth a trip across
the Atlantic. Step away from the familiar landscape of Queens and enjoy the atmosphere of
what it would be like to dine at Port Syros, sitting gracefully on the shore of the
Mediterranean, while watching sailboats dance in and out of the harbor.
Enjoy fine imported wines from all over the
world as traditional Greek music further sets the mood for an unforgettable time.
Every-thing has been imported from Greece: the tables, the chairs, the candles, the
murals, and even the fishing net overhead, just under the glass-atrium enclosure. Owner
and designer, Theodore Menis, has created a place that makes you feel thousands of miles
away, in a foreign, but welcome land.
Start with a long list of savory appetizers
or a bowl of soup. The traditional fish soup ($4.50) thrills the taste buds with its mix
of striped bass, whiting, and porgy.
For the main course and the
selection is more than accommodating to even the most fickle of eaters I selected
the souvlaki swordfish ($14.95), which is prepared on a skewer, charcoal grilled, and
accompanied by slices of onions, peppers, and tomatoes. Lightly bathed in a delicate oil
sauce, it proved to be a wonderful treat.
Seafood is their specialty, but if it is
not your preference, there exists an equally extensive choice of meals with pork, chicken,
steak, and veal, sure to delight.
The wait staff is courteous and attentive,
attending to every request.
The food can stand alone with the finest
restaurants in Queens, but the synergy of dining and atmosphere places Syros out of
ordinary category, and into a realm of welcomed uniqueness.
