We were treated royally at the Royal Restaurant, where owners Gary and Eddie welcomed us and a full house of New Year Eve celebrants to greet the new millennium. The highlight of the evening was the energetic Lion Dancers making their "lucky visit" to the tables to the rhythm of drums — an Asian custom for welcoming the new year that will become more prevalent all around the borough in coming weeks as the Chinese New Year approaches on Feb. 5.

And in addition to the festive atmosphere, of course, there was the wonderful food.

This recently opened restaurant features both Chinese and Japanese cuisine. Their New Year’s Eve special menu was a special bargain at $18.95 and it was part of the fun of eating at this delightful place for each member of our party to request something different from the menu to be prepared to order. Then, as the dishes are served, all guests can employ chopsticks to try each dish from Sushi (a house specialty) to Sizzling Steak with Black Pepper Sauce.

But every day this restaurant offers a royal choice of well-prepared and well-presented food. Try the Chinese Seafood Basket with scallops, lobster and shrimp as well as an assortment of vegetables from snow peas to water chestnuts. Or, try the fresh Japanese style Lobster Teriyaki.

Prefer meat? Then try the BBQ Lamb or the Salt & Pepper Pork Chop. Chicken and duck are also popular choices.

There is a nice selection for vegetarians and dieters who can select from entrees from Mou Shu Vegetables with Pancakes to Jumbo Shrimp with mixed vegetables served with brown rice and special diet sauce on the side ($6.50). We especially recommend the combination of cuisines in the Obento Box entree.

All of their pricing is reasonable, and they feature value meal specials from 4-10 p.m. on Mon.-Thurs., as well as free local delivery.

For lunch, dinner or a special celebration meal, the Royal Restaurant is a good choice for food variety, price and service.
