The
Union Turnpike location of this family pizzeria and restaurant
organization is run by one of Phil’s sons . . . the outgoing,
enthusiastic Anthony. The menu features Mother Maria’s authentic Italian
recipes. Whether you want a fast snack or a complete sit-down dinner, the
food is fresh and delicious. You can even watch as many of the items are
prepared and displayed in the clean service area.
We
started with a shared hot appetizer that included stuffed mushrooms,
butterflied shrimp, baked clams and eggplant rollantini coated generously
with mozzarella ($8.25)
My
entrée from the regular menu was the Cappelini Primavera ($8.25) — a
generous portion of thin pasta (with my choice of garlic and oil dressing)
topped with fresh broccoli, peas, carrots, mushrooms and tomatoes.
Delicious!
From
the Weekly Specials chalkboard my dining partner chose the Scungilli &
Shrimp on Linguine with Marinara Sauce. After the first bite, he
complemented Anthony on the surprisingly tenderness of this
difficult-to-prepare fish. Along with our entrees, we shared a colorful
salad of fresh mixed greens with black olives and cukes topped with
shredded red cabbage and a vinaigrette dressing ($3.50).
The accompanying hot bread was excellent, too.
Don’t
forget to save room for dessert. The NY Cheesecake went well with the
end-of-meal coffee.
Besides
the always-available pizza, calzones, hot and cold heros, burgers and
assorted pasta dishes, there are the Weekly Specials. These are
budget-priced complete dinners (available after 5pm) that includes a soup
or salad, an entrée and a free glass of wine or soda. This week’s
specials included the Scungilli & Shrimp we ordered ($13.95), Chicken
Florentine with Pasta ($11.95) and Veal Romano with Mushrooms in Wine
Sauce ($12.95).
The
founding parents, Phil and Maria D’Aguanno, operate the original Phil
& Sons on Main Street near the NY Hospital of Queens.
