From the rustic beams and the fireplace featured in their main dining
area to the red curtains over the bathroom doors and the eclectic bar area, Nick &
Maggies is the perfect combination of comfort, style and down right wonderful food.
I warmed up to my dinner with their New England Clam Chowder ($3.50)
which could have been a meal in itself filled with chunks of clams and potatoes.
My companion opted for the Raw Bar (check their daily specials for
their selection of oysters, clams, shrimp and shellfish) and was met by a beautiful
presentation of oysters and clams to the number she requested and of perfect freshness.
I ordered the Grilled Prime Filet Mignon with Portobello mushroom cap
set on whipped potatoes with french beans, Gofrette chips and Port wine sauce ($22.95).
And because I am difficult, I ordered it medium well done . . . which is almost impossible
to execute to a tender and moist finish. My thorough waitress (Michelle) warned me that
the filet would have to be butterfly cut to achieve my request, and I consented. I was
presented with a steak done to sheer perfect and trimmed in the most delicious Port sauce
that when I took home the crumbs that remained, I wish I could have asked for an
additional order of the sauce as well.
My companion, tempted by the mouth-watering descriptions of their
desserts, held out room for the warm chocolate cake with cappuccino ice cream and vanilla
Crème Anglaise ($5). Michelle warned that it takes 12 minutes because they make it fresh
. . . and my friend concluded it would be worth at least twice the wait.
Their menu is extensive, the food quality and presentation beautiful
and the atmosphere perfect for a special night out with visiting relatives, that special
date with your special someone, a friendly drink at the bar or the family treat on Friday
night.
