Seeing Donovan’s owner, Erin again at the Taste of Bayside recently reminded us that it has been a long time since our last visit to this fine restaurant. We found it as good as we remembered and carrying on the tradition of its parent restaurant . . . the landmark Donovan’s of Woodside. We enjoyed the relaxed ambiance of this large and comfortable restaurant with its banquettes, exposed brick walls, large fireplace and prints of hunting scenes.

Our server, Emma, took our drink order for a glass of house Pinot Grigio and left us a printed list of the night’s specials to read while she went to the large, friendly bar separated from the dining area. Included on the specials were Pot Roast ($6.95), Broiled Salmon Filet ($12.95) and a special Steak Sandwich. We chose the Whole Brook Trout Almandine ($11.95) which arrived grilled to perfection and accompanied by the baked potato and mashed turnips we requested.

For appetizers we started with a crock of hearty Beef Barley Soup and a bowl of Matzo Ball (3) Soup. Both were well made and great for a rainy night.

For our other entrée we chose from the regular menu a favorite of ours which Donovan’s does exceptionally well — old fashioned Fish & Chips freshly made and hot. The filet was sweet and flaky and the thick-cut fries were perfect (non greasy).

Other popular items on the regular menu are Special Hamburgers, the traditional Irish Shepherd’s Pie (8.50), Maryland Style Crab Cakes ($9.95) and the featured 16 ounce Shell Steak ($13.95). All entrees include potatoes or rice, and a fresh vegetable. NOTE: Many of the recipes come from the Donovan family. There is a children’s menu too.

Desserts include Chocolate Mousse Cake, Cheesecake and Carrot Cake at $3.50 each. To go with your dessert, do enjoy a special Irish Coffee for a perfect finish to dining out at Donovan’s of Bayside.
