It is often the lament of barbecue lovers, that one cannot reap the benefits of the grill, without first enduring the preparatory trials and tribulations of outdoor cooking. But rather than refill your propane tank, head over to Canyon Creek in Bayside. There you can indulge in some top-notch western style barbecue, without even lifting a spatula.

Both the  name and the decor of the restaurant were designed to evoke wild west motifs. The huge colorful murals that line the interior transport to the “Gunfight at the Crayola Coral.”

Like other steak and rib joints, Canyon Creek has an extensive list of appetizers to choose from. The chef recommends the Canyon Platter ($8.95) which offered a superb sampling, including the spicy buffalo wings, stuffed potato skins, deep-fried mozzarella and chicken fingers. Cut from tasty Spanish onions, and deep-fried in a light batter, the Onion Loaf ($3.95) is not to be missed.

From baby backs ($11.95 for a half slab) to the gigantic and spicy Texas Gunpowder variety, Canyon Creek knows ribs. The Texas Gunpowder ($11.95), drenched in a special hot sauce, is best described as “ribs with attitude.”

The New York Char-broiled Sirloin ($14.95), is 12 ounces of prime beef, grilled to perfection. If you are really hungry, go for Canyon Creek’s Special 20-ounce Sirloin ($19.95), and have it smothered with onion marmellata for an extra 55¢.

In addition to these steak and rib staples, Canyon also offers a grand array of salads, chicken and seafood dishes. All entrees were served with either mashed, baked or fried potatoes and vegetables, or barbecued baked beans. There is an early bird special ($9.95) from Monday to Saturday, and an “All you can eat” rib special from Monday to Wednesday. Thursday night is “Steak Night,” featuring an assortment of steak specials.

If you still insist on barbecuing the hard way, Canyon Creek can ease your pain, by providing you with pre-marinated steaks and ribs, ready to be thrown on the grill. Large “family packs” of ribs and chicken are also available. If you want to hand over all of the work, Canyon Creek also offers full service catering.
