It’s
always a pleasurable experience to dine at Anthony’s, where fine Italian
cuisine is accompanied by fine wines including some wines from the
family’s own vineyard on Long Island. Along with the impeccable service
of the professional staff and graciousness of the host, Richard, the
Italian dishes are presented attractively in an ambience that is relaxing.
When
our server, Fabio, listed the many specials of the day, he made each one
sound so tempting that we were hard put to choose just one. Over a glass
of Compari we decided to share a special seafood appetizer which included
crab meat, shrimp and lobster tail served with a tangy dipping sauce
($13). Specials of the day are really specials so you can’t go wrong
ordering them without agonizing over selecting from the many offerings on
the menu.
For
our entrée we again stuck with the specials of the day. One entrée was
the Filet of Monk Fish with a champagne sauce surrounded by sliced
strawberries and hot white grapes on a
artistically painted platter ($17.95). The accompanying side dish
was fresh, whole beans and garlic-flavored new potatoes.
Our
other selection from the specials of the day was a long time favorite of
this writer – Osso Bucco served with a choice of pasta or rice (our
choice). The portion was enormous but the special feature was the
easy-to-get sweet marrow that was dug out and smeared on fresh warm bread.
An excellent dish! Our compliments to the chef.
After
ordering the entrées, our knowledgeable server, Fabio, who used to own
his own restaurant, assisted us in selecting from the wine list. We chose
a delightful 1998 Chardonnay from the family-owned Macari vineyards at
North Fork, Long Island.
This
not-too-dry white wine has a special flavor imparted by the use of French
oak barrels. Check the list for other excellent Macari wines.
Anthony’s
offers a number of special menus including a catering menu
for their private party room. Luncheon is served Monday through
Friday from 12 noon until 5 p.m. For a bargain $12.95 you have a choice
of appetizers and entrées, dessert and coffee or tea. Entrées
from which to choose include various pastas, Chicken Franchese, Filet of
Sole and Veal Parmigiana with Spaghetti. Sundays through Thursdays,
Anthony’s offers a Price Fixe dinner at $19.95.
The
house special on the a la carte menu is Veal Anthony with prosciutto,
eggplant and cheese in a sherry wine sauce ($15.95). As always, the a la
carte menu has a fine selection of items from appetizers, soups, seafood
and meats such as the Veal Anthony.
Don’t
miss the made-on-the-premises desserts. The choice is difficult between
the luscious Rum Cake, homemade Italian Cheesecake and other delicacies
including Tortoni. All are a good finish with your coffee and cordial.
