Kia: Revving It Up
Kia
Twenty-two-year-old model Kia may share a name with an economy import
car, but she distinguishes herself with the beauty and substance of the most
exclusive of vehicles.
The
Jamaica resident already has two bachelor's degrees, in business management
and sociology, and is now going to the University of Connecticut to get her
MBA in management and information systems.
She’s
been modeling for six months now with the Southeast Queens-based Black
Cartel modeling agency, having done a few fashion shows for names like Peter
Black, Disturbing the Peace and House of Nines.
She’s
having fun modeling, but wants to make a profession in the fashion world
behind the lens.
A
self-professed corporate junkie and “nerd in technology,” Kia wants to
be an online marketing consultant for fashion labels.
She already has a deal to do web marketing for a Greenwich Village
boutique.
But
her real passion is community service.
Kia is an active member of her church –
the giant Allen A.M.E. on Merrick Boulevard
– and spends her weekends mentoring a 10th-grader through the Big
Brothers Big Sisters program.
The beautiful role model not only shows her new little sister the
world of arts and entertainment, but of “the business side of things,”
too.
“What
I like best is being able to return to the community what was given to
me,” Kia said.
Right
now, Kia is writing a film script based on her life as a young girl in
Brooklyn and a young woman in Jamaica.
She tells the story of going against great odds, along with friends
who have also been successful, including a doctor, a lawyer and a teacher.
“We
all came from the projects and we’re trying to make something better of
ourselves,” Kia said.
The
Fort Totten Subway To D.C.?
A QConfer was surfing the information superhighway and stopped off at a link to an alternate Fort Totten...well, almost.
The
site advised that the reader take the Fort Totten Station “located
literally in the middle of Fort Totten Park.” The site added that the
station “serving the Red line has an island platform and a gull-wing roof,
similar to the Silver Spring and Takoma Stations. In the mezzanine are
transfers leading to the lower level Green line platform.” Doesn’t
sound like subway lines in and out of Bayside, Queens? Good catch – in
fact the subway doesn’t go to Queens, but it does apparently go through
Fort Totten Park in Washington D.C. Don’t believe us, check the link yourself at www.nycsubway.org/us/washdc/red/wmata-red-totten.html. Cute
Or What?
Woodhaven
native Adrien Brody melted hearts with his Oscar-winning performance
in “The Pianist,” and apparently, with his tall, dark and handsome
looks, too. Brody
was named E!Online’s ninth most eligible bachelor in the media outfit’s
list of the top 25 hottest available
male celebs. Brody
was beaten out by dreamboats the likes of George Clooney, Justin
Timberlake, and Manhattan’s Vin Diesel, but was able to beat
out studs like Dennis Quaid and Tiger Woods among others. Queens
should be proud. And
Brody wasn’t even the only Queens connection in the top 25. Toby
McGuire – the baby-faced cutie who came in 20th on the list – plays
Forest Hills resident Peter Parker in the big screen version of Spider-man;
and Paul Walker – the sexy blonde who starred in “The Fast And
The Furious” – is listed as coming from Glendale...but in California. Still,
Brody is the only direct Queens connection, and E!Online doesn't even make
that fact clear. Brody is listed on the site as coming from “New York
City” instead of Queens. That would be fine if the other New Yorkers on
the list were identified the same way, but they weren’t. Eligible bachelor
number 13 Jimmy Fallon is listed as coming from Brooklyn. Fair
or not, you can find the top 25 bachelors at www.eonline.com. Chart
Topper and Best Seller?
Can
Queens rapper 50 Cent go from the top of the music charts to the top
of the best seller list? He
seems to think so, according to published reports, which said that he is
seeking a six-figure advance for his biography. The
book has a working title of “Number One With Nine Bullets” – a
reference to when he was shot nine times in Jamaica, Queens before becoming
hip hop’s hottest artist of the moment. The
book reportedly details his life from the time his “drug dealing” mother
was shot and killed when 50 Cent was eight-years-old to catching his big
break, reported 987Kiss.com, the website of NYC music station 98.7 Kiss FM. If
the rapper lands a publishing deal, the book could be in stores as early as
September, according to the website. Meet
the Mayor! District
managers and chairpersons from Queens community boards convened at Gracie
Mansion on May 18 – about a week early for the big Rudy wedding. With
their counterparts from all five boroughs, they were there to meet the
current mayor, shake his hand and pose smiling next to Bloomberg. It’s
an annual event, at which Bloomberg shows his appreciation to the selfless
leaders of the City’s community boards. But
Mike had been listening to recent polls, so it was no forgone conclusion
that everyone in his mansion even wanted to take a picture with him. Hey, if
there are people who wouldn’t even have dinner with the mayor, there are
certainly those who wouldn’t want to appear in the same photograph. So,
according to an insider, Bloomberg asked the roughly 120 community board
hoohahs if they “still want to take a picture with me.” His
tongue and cheek comment got a laugh, and not one visitor declined to stand
next to Mike and show their pearly whites.
