Log on to www.mebq.com. Peter Vallones website. Then log on to www.mebq.org, Alan Hevesis website. Whats the catch? Mebq is an acronym for Alan Hevesis mayoral campaign slogan, "Most Experienced, Best Qualified." The Vallone campaign took Hevesis slogan initials and registered the URL. Confused? So is Hevesi. It really only matters to the inside players. Score one for Vallone but sorry, it means no votes. CrowleyYoung City Council candidate Elizabeth Crowley made a creative political move by withdrawing from the 30th Council District (CD) race to run in the 26th and apparently she is taking Elmhurst with her. She made the announcement in Middle Village alongside her cousin, Congressman Joseph Crowley. In a news release about her candidacy, it stated that the district represents, "Middle Village, Ridgewood, Glendale and parts of Elmhurst and Forest Hills." Yet the office of Thomas Ognibene, the current council member for the 30th who awaits appointment to the Court of Claims, confirmed that Elmhurst did not fall under their jurisdiction, but sections of Woodhaven do. Crowley will run in a special election which is expected to be called once Ognibene ascends to the bench. She will face an uphill battle against Ognibenes chief-of-staff, the knowledgeable Dennis Gallagher. Red Hot!Although thought of as a California guy, add Red Hot Chilli Peppers guitarist John Frusciante to the list of famous musicians hailing from Queens. According to a bio of the guitarist, he lived in Astoria for the first sixteen years of his life. The bio describes Frusciantes early experiences as "masturbating and playing his guitar to the likes of Frank Zappa and Jimi Hendrix for up to 15 hours a day." At sixteen he moved across the country to Los Angeles to "find a job and an apartment." We dont know whatever happened with the apartment, but he certainly found a job, joining one of the most famous rock groups in the world at the age of only nineteen. The G SpotAs much as QConfidential hates to admit it, Manhattan seems to be the center of New York City. It is the seat of power, with City Hall and Gracie Mansion situated there. Wall Street, downtown, is the center of the world economy. The skyscrapers and Broadway help attract about 35 million tourists each year. In recognition of this fact, all subway lines travel through Manhattan, taking people from the surrounding boroughs to visit and work there all subway lines except for the G train, which runs from Forest Hills in Queens to Union Street in Brooklyn. Thats right of 23 subway lines; the G line is the only one that does not touch Manhattan. Even though Manhattan is the center of our city, we in Queens know that our borough is superior. Let Manhattan have all the tourists; we dont want everyone coming here. This is rightfully an elitist borough, which is why we have our own train that we share with our sister borough, Brooklyn. Green With Melfy
The character of Dr. Jennifer Melfy on "The Sopranos" played by Lorraine Bracco has had it rough, real rough, very, very rough this year. Shes Tony Sopranos shrink and has had to grapple with unresolved emotions towards him. Whats worse is that she was brutally raped. Shes about to crack up, herself. Theres been no let up in her real life, either. Bracco has filed for bankruptcy, split from that guy, the teacher in "Stand and Deliver," and shes fought her previous ex, Harvey Kietel, over rights to their daughter. How does she cope? A QConfidential source says, " Gardening. Shes obsessed with it. She goes to the supply store almost every day. She gets seeds, fertilizer, the whole nine yards." Capisce? Purrfect Family HarmonyMusic and Politics seem to weave through the fiber of family of the late Queens Symphony Orchestra conductor, David Katz. Daughter Melinda weve heard her sing a former Assemblywoman who oversees Community Boards for the Queens Beep, is in the process of running for City Council. But Melinda's brother, Matthew, is keeping the musical tradition alive as the new director of the York College Center for the Performing Arts. Matthew told us he intends to bring in some of the biggest acts in R&B to the college theatre in Jamaica. The theatre, which opened in 1986, has remained largely underused, but Matthew says hes gearing up to make it the premiere spot for entertainment in the community. It may not be his fathers music but we cant wait to hear the Katz meow. Sign Of The Times
With Queens West the massive apartment complex plan for Long Island City moving along, a development corporation has been attempting to purchase the historic Pepsi-Cola bottling plant. Pepsi has been open to negotiations, but one term has been agreed upon the sign stays. Although the site of the plant will eventually become a 30-plus story luxury apartment complex, the giant red Pepsi sign that has been hanging over the East River since 1937 will not go away anytime soon. According to sources, it has already been agreed upon that the sign will live on from the top of a parking garage facing the river. When asked about he importance of the terms that the sign stays, a Pepsi spokesperson said, "it has been pivotal to all negotiations. There are millions of people with memories associated with that sign, and we are pleased it will remain a reminder of times past." Well drink to that.
