AID
The year was 1973 as a young Senator Frank Padavan protests outside City Hall, demanding
the reinstatement of school-aid from the City budget. Padavan was joined by concerned
parents and residents in the march, directed at then-New York City Schools Superintendent
Irving Anker. The demonstration worked, as school aid was restored a short time later.

WINDMILL
Moving On Up: The
Douglaston
Estate windmill had been built in
1870, used in the days before electric power when Douglaston was a farming enclave. By the
turn of the 20th century the farms were being replaced by a number of homes and time and
new technology eventually outdated the
old windmill. Considered a land-mark,
a replica of the windmill now stands in Alley Pond Park.

Mayor Lindsays failure to clean up Queens after this Sunday, Feb. 9, 1969 snow cost
him dearly in the next election.
