| A Childs View Following derogatory statements about Queens immigrants, children from elementary
school P.S. 69 in Jackson Heights sent Atlanta Braves pitcher John Rocker their book about
the history of Jackson Heights. Inside the book was a letter explaining that if he read
the book, maybe he would understand them and like them better. The letter closed with an
invitation for Rocker to visit the school.
The following is an exerpt from the work, entitled
"Jackson Heights: From Ice Age To Space Age."
 The Tomahawk Mystery
One of the earliest Dutch farmers was
Hendryk Harmensen. In 1640 he lived in a small farmhouse near what is now the Marine Air
Terminal at LaGuardia Airport. Harmensen also made weapons for soldiers. Sometimes he
would make special metal axes called tomahawks for the natives. Harmensens axes were
easy to identify. They had a wide, sharp blade for cutting and three sharp points at the
top, bottom and back of the blade. One morning his wife found him dead on the kitchen
floor. He had been murdered with one of his own tomahawks! By whom? No one every found
out.
